Perform highly skilled work in the maintenance and repair of equipment and facilities operated by Columbus Water Works. Perform preventive, predictive, regular and unscheduled maintenance and repair on equipment at all facilities. Inspect, test, and repair pumps, motors, valves, piping systems, air compressors, dewatering equipment, sludge removal equipment, tanks, mixers, trash screens, vacuum systems, oil accumulator systems, chemical feed equipment, odor control systems, filters, HVAC systems, backflow devices, etc. Troubleshoots and evaluates devices and equipment to test performance. Determines material needs and requisitions as needed to perform job duties. Lead, supervise, and train Maintenance Tech I and Maintenance Tech Apprentice employees as needed to perform maintenance and repair on all equipment and facilities. Work in confined spaces and outside weather conditions. Perform related duties as required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Perform expertly skilled work in the maintenance of water and wastewater equipment as directed and scheduled by the Managed Maintenance Department and Computerized Maintenance Management System. Will work under the supervision of the Mechanical Maintenance Supervisor and under the general direction of the Managed Maintenance Superintendent
  • Respond to equipment failures during normal and off shift hours and perform repair on equipment
  • Required to be in the monthly “On Call” rotation
  • Dismantle equipment to gain access and to remove / replace defective parts
  • Adjust all functional parts of devices and equipment utilized by CWW in various processes
  • Install and maintain piping systems and related hydraulic and pneumatic equipment
  • Inspect, test, and repair pumps, motors, valves, piping systems, air compressors, dewatering equipment, sludge removal equipment, tanks, mixers, trash screens, vacuum systems, oil accumulator systems, chemical feed equipment, odor control systems, filters, HVAC systems, backflow devices, etc.
  • Troubleshoot and evaluate devices and equipment to test its performance
  • Determine and communicate with supervisor for the requisition of parts needed to perform job duties
  • Safely and expertly use and maintain maintenance tools, including but not limited to, drill presses, grinders, hand tools power tools, welders, cutting torches, saws, cranes, backhoes, boom trucks etc.
  • Must be able to climb water tanks up to 165’ high
  • Must be able to work in lift stations up to 90’ below ground level using ladder or safety harness to perform required maintenance
  • Lead, supervise, and train Mechanical Tech I and Mechanical Tech Apprentice employees as needed to perform maintenance and repair on all equipment and facilities operated by Columbus Water Works
  • Enter time, materials, and pertinent data into MAXIMO as work orders are completed
  • Perform job duties associated with the generation of work orders in MAXIMO.
  • Must obtain Backflow Certification within two years.


QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
:

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

High School Diploma or GED required. A minimum of five years of experience in industrial plant mechanical maintenance coupled with two years of experience in a lead or supervisory role required and/or equivalent combination of education, technical knowledge and experience which will provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Technical School training courses in Industrial Maintenance and/or specialized training related to water & wastewater treatment equipment maintenance preferred. Previous work experience assembling, installing, and/or maintaining piping systems required. Must be able to dismantle, clean, lubricate, repair, and replace shafts, gears, impellers, and other parts of pumps, motors, chemical feed systems and other equipment required. Possession of a valid driver’s license and good driving record required. Must obtain certification in Confined Space Entry, Lock Out / Tag Out, CPR and First Aid classes within one year of employment required.


LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Must read and interpret documents, such as safety rules, operating & maintenance instructions, chemical data sheets, and OEM manuals; must write routine reports and correspondence; must speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.


MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Must add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals; ability to compute rate, ratio and percent and to draw and interpret various bar graphs; ability to read and interpret blueprints related to assigned duties.


REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to apply common sense to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form; ability to deal with problems involving variables in standardized situations; ability to complete assignments with little or no supervision.

The employee must occasionally lift and be able to move objects of up to fifty pounds; specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. Must be able to climb 165 feet above ground and work up to 90 feet underground required, accessing by ladders or safety harness to perform maintenance required.


WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those the employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and is regularly exposed to risk of electrical shock. The employee is frequently exposed to vibration. The employee occasionally works in high precarious places, confined spaces, in outside weather conditions and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The employee regularly works with and around chemicals to include chlorine and fluoride, associated tanks, piping and chemical feed systems commonly found in the water and wastewater industry.


The noise level in the work environment is usually medium.
