What are the responsibilities and job description for the General Manager, Sales Operations Manager position at Columbus Striping?
We are seeking an entrepreneurial General Manager to act as the "Head of Business," reporting directly to the owner. In this role, you will not sit behind a desk—you will be the face of the company and the driving force behind our revenue.
You will wear three primary hats: Lead Salesperson, Master Scheduler, and Crew Leader. You will be responsible for finding the work, scheduling the work, and hiring the crew to execute the work. Core Responsibilities:
1. Business Development & Sales (Primary Focus)
- Be the Main Salesman: Actively hunt for new business by visiting job sites, cold-calling property managers, and networking with paving companies and local associations (e.g., Georgia Asphalt Pavement Association).
- Bid Management: Conduct site evaluations, estimate costs, and present competitive proposals to clients in the Columbus area.
- Client Relationships: Serve as the primary point of contact for key accounts (military bases, school districts, HOAs), ensuring communication is clear and repeat business is secured.
2. Operations & Scheduling
- Master Scheduling: Own the production calendar. You will coordinate all job scheduling to ensure maximum crew efficiency, weather compliance, and deadline adherence.
- Project Management: Utilize software (e.g., Jobber) to track bids, schedule jobs, and invoice clients.
- Inventory & Logistics: Manage the warehouse facility; order materials (sealants, paints) and ensure equipment (striping machines, seal tanks) is maintained and ready for daily deployment.
- Financial Health: manage job costs to ensure we hit our target of <15% COGS and 40% gross margins.
3. Leadership & Team Building
- Build the Crew: You will recruit, interview, and hire the initial crew of 2–4 technicians.
- Lead from the Front: Train your team on safety (OSHA), quality standards, and efficiency. You must be willing to get your hands dirty and demonstrate how the job is done when necessary.
- Reporting: specific weekly reporting to the owner regarding sales pipeline, revenue forecasts, and operational bottlenecks.
Qualifications:
- Sales & Hustle: Proven track record of finding customers and closing deals. You must be comfortable hearing "no" and persistent enough to get to a "yes."
- Operational Experience: 3 years in construction, paving, landscaping, or a related trade. You understand how to schedule crews and manage logistics.
- Leadership: Experience hiring and managing blue-collar teams. You know how to motivate a crew to show up on time and do high-quality work.
- Tech Savvy: Comfortable using CRM/Scheduling software (Jobber, ServiceTitan, etc.) and Excel/Google Sheets for reporting.
- Local Knowledge: Familiarity with the Columbus, GA market and local commercial players is a significant advantage.
- Valid Driver’s License: Clean driving record required.
