SENIOR CENTER PROGRAM COORDINATOR

General Statement of Duties

Plans, coordinates, implements, and evaluates educational and recreational activities for senior citizens in the County.

Distinguishing Features of the Class

An employee in this class organizes, supervises and participates in providing a variety of programming, including classes and group activities for the community's senior citizens in one of seven senior citizen centers located throughout the county. Employees promote interest in personal health care, safety, tax, nutrition, insurance, Medicare, Medicaid, and recreational activities through providing a variety of programs. Work also involves recruitment of seniors for Center activities by encouraging participation and ensuring that programs are supportive, responsive to senior citizen needs and interests, and that outreach and instructional staff is available to support these programs. Employees promote the ability of senior citizens to remain in a home environment as long as possible as an alternative to institutional care. Employees exercise independence in initiating and executing special activities and programs for senior citizens within policy objectives and budgetary limitations. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Director of Aging and is evaluated by the effectiveness and community support of the program and by ongoing evaluation and annual performance reviews.

Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Tasks

Plans, schedules and promotes special activities, programs, and workshops for senior citizens.

Reviews and approves health-related programs and classes pertaining to topics such as weight management, nutrition, blood pressure, arthritis, osteoporosis, or other issues effecting senior citizens.

Coordinates various social activities; plans and participates in activities such as shopping trips, educational trips, recreational trips; visits other senior centers, senior games, and holiday activities.

Supervises a staff of volunteers; processes any concerns and problems; recruits and trains volunteer workers.

Conducts excursions and activities of special interest for seniors.

Coordinates daily work activities; monitors status of work in progress and inspects completed work.

Develops a working rapport with various senior citizen boards and community and state agencies and leaders for programmatic endeavors.

Ensures compliance with all departmental policies and procedures.

Counsels and advises participants concerning educational, insurance, tax, and medical issues.

Plans, schedules, and supervises activities, facility, supplies, and equipment.

Publicizes programs and activities of the center to the public.

Knowledges Skills And Abilities

Considerable knowledge of issues and life styles that affect senior citizens including a variety of recreation activities such as educational, social, medical, nutritional activities that are suitable for senior citizens.

Considerable knowledge of issues relating to programs directed toward senior citizens and ability to explain those issues in easily understood terms; ability to develop supporting materials to aid senior citizens.

Considerable knowledge of techniques and methods used in directing senior citizens in special activities.

Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, community and state agencies, and the general public.

Ability to plan, organize, and supervise the work of others including staff and volunteers.

Ability to work effectively, tactfully and courteously with the public and other governmental organizations.

Physical Requirements

Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, fingering, talking, and hearing.

Must be able to perform light work exerting 20 pounds of force occasionally; and 10 pounds of force frequently.

Must possess the visual acuity to prepare and analyze data and figures, operate a computer terminal, and determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of work assigned.

Desirable Education and Experience

Graduation from high school and considerable experience working with senior citizens programming and event management; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
