PURPOSE

This position is responsible for developing a high school college and career readiness program and to provide post-secondary counseling support to secondary students. 

 

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

  • Work with Director of Secondary Counseling in establishing program goals. 
  • Provide career and post-secondary entrance information and assistance to students, teachers, and families. 
  • Collaborate with school counselors and AVID teachers to support the post-secondary plans of all students. 
  • Participates as a member of the counseling team in all meetings and professional development. 
  • Coordinate community scholarship applications and Senior Awards Night. 
  • Prepare scholarship search materials and present to students and families. Work with students individually to complete scholarship applications. 
  • Coordinate the FAFSA Frenzy events as well as providing individual supports for FAFSA completion. 
  • Plan, develop and implement career events. 
  • Schedule post-secondary representative visits; organize, coordinate and publicize career-related events and other opportunities for students to learn about higher education and vocational training and preparation. 
  • Coordinate college readiness testing and provide prep materials and results interpretation. 
  • Act as the military liaison to make referrals for ASVAB testing. 
  • Analyze post-secondary data and communicate the results to stakeholders. Use the results to inform programming. 
  • Orient seniors and their families to the supports available in the post-secondary setting and ensure that students know how to access help once they have graduated from high school.

QUALIFICATIONS

 

Minimum Requirements: Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology; Missouri certification in K-12 or 7-12 Counseling

ADA REQUIREMENTS

 

Language: Read, analyze and interpret professional journals, Board policy, administrative procedures, and forms; Complete forms, write reports and engage in written correspondence with parents;  present information effectively and respond to questions; Speak to students and parents in groups of various sizes, as well as engage in one-on-one communication; Demonstrate excellent listening and non-verbal communication skills.

 

Computation: Work with mathematical concepts, such as probability and statistical inference; Apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.

 

Reasoning: Solve a variety of problems in many different situations; Interpret instructions presented in written, oral, diagram or schedule form; Apply knowledge of current educational theory and instructional techniques while presenting subject matter to students; Demonstrate executive functions such as planning, organizing, remembering, and regulating information and behavior as they pertain to student performance and achievement.

 

Other Skills and Abilities:  Identify needs and abilities of individual students and adapt methods accordingly; Establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers and parents; Perform multiple tasks simultaneously; Maintain confidentiality of student information.

 

Technology: Perform basic computer functions such as word processing and internet use; Use district software for finding student information; Utilize smart boards, projectors and other instructional technology provided by the district.

 

Physical Demands: An individual who holds this position must have the ability to: Speak and hear in an environment where numerous conversations and activities may be taking place simultaneously, move around the classroom to interact with and manage students/groups of students, and read handwritten or printed material.

 

Attendance: Consistent and regular attendance is an essential function of this position.

Conditions and Environment: The individual who holds this position will regularly work in a school environment that is noisy and active.  Occasionally the individual will be required to work outdoors for short periods of time to perform such tasks as loading and unloading students from district transportation.
