HOURS:         8 hours /day, 12 months a year

REPORTS TO:  Transportation Manager

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

  • Drives school bus or transportation vehicle over assigned route in accordance with time schedule.
  • Boards and discharges student passengers in a safe and orderly manner.
  • Transports students, staff, and chaperones on field trips, athletic activities, and other special trips.
  • Enforces District policies and procedures related to transportation and maintains discipline on buses.
  • Prepares student discipline citations as needed.
  • Prepares daily reports of mileage, time, and student loads.
  • Prepares the fleet of buses prior to the drivers arriving in the morning including but not limited to removing snow and ice from the windows.  
  • Washes and details the interior and exterior of all District vehicles, buses, trucks, cars, and vans, including but not limited to: the floors, seats, walls, ceilings, and door jams, must remove any graffiti or spots.
  • Maintains and cleans the wash bays.
  • Maintains a list of supplies needed to perform duties.
  • Assists the shop mechanics in all areas, specializing in keeping the District’s vehicles washed and fluids maintained.
  • Performs minor bus maintenance checks and reports maintenance needs.
  • Renders first aid or emergency assistance as needed.
  • May transport other materials in District vehicles.
  • Maintains good order among students on buses, following District policies regarding discipline of children and contact with parents and other citizens.
  • Instructs students and others on proper bus behavior and emergency procedures.
  • During times buses are not in use, may be assigned to general maintenance and cleanup activities in the transportation department.
  • Ensures compliance with application provisions of state motor vehicle code and education code, as related to bus driving and transporting students.

DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Work history demonstrating dependability and reliability; good driving record; high school diploma or equivalent; or any combination of training and experience likely to provide the desired knowledge and abilities.
  • Possession of valid Montana commercial driver’s license, accompanied by satisfactory medical examination report; passenger, air brakes, general knowledge and bus endorsements.  Willing to train qualified candidate for CDL requirements.
  • Holds a valid basic first aid certificate.
  • Hold valid TR-35 Form.
  • Ability to obey all traffic laws.
  • Knowledge of safe driving practices.
  • Knowledge of geography of the School District and other districts served.
  • Operates school buses, exercising good judgment and extreme caution.
  • Ability to drive school buses safely over a variety of normal and hazardous road conditions.
  • Maintains order among students on a bus.
  • Ability to learn designated bus routes, bus stops, and District traffic hazards.
  • Able to make route reports.
  • Able to keep simple records.
  • Ability to perform heavy physical labor.
  • Knowledge of cleaning chemicals and being able to understand safety data sheets.
  • Ability to work effectively without close supervision.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, the public, and staff members.
  • Maintains cooperative working relationships with those contracted in the course of work.
  • Ability to handle stressful situations.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of student matters.
  • Ability to effectively manage time and responsibilities including arriving early when snow/ice is present.
  • Relief central receiving delivery driver as needed.

 

EQUIPMENT AND MATERIALS USED:

 

Two-way radio equipment, special needs equipment, telephone/voice mail.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works inside and outside.  The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints.  The environment can be stressful due to the nature of the work. 

 

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; occasionally walk and stand.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.  The employee is required to be able to hear conversations in quiet environments. May be required to lift or carry up to 30 pounds.  

 

MENTAL/MOTOR DEMANDS:

 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee often performs routine work.  Guidance and reinforcement are usually unavailable.  The employee frequently works within time constraints and maintains attentiveness intensity.  The employee may be involved in interactions which require oral and written communications.

  1. Current resume.
  2. CDL - Each driver must possess a current Commercial Driver's License with air brake and school bus endorsements, and a minimum of five years licensed driving experience.  If you do not currently possess a CDL, please contact 892.6550 x 1421 to schedule training.
  3. DOT Physical Exam - A physical examination is mandatory to verify the health status of the applicant.
  4. CPR & First Aid - A current CPR and first aid certificate must be obtained, or verification of sign-up in an upcoming class.
  5. Driving Record - Copy of your current driving record from the Department of Motor Vehicles  (https://cars.dojmt.gov/app/_/#1)

If hired, these requirements must be met before the first day of work:

  1. Pre-employment drug test - District will contact you for your appointment.
  2. Fingerprinting - This district requires final candidates to pay for their own background check. Fingerprinting is done by appointment only; please call Karla Therrien at (406) 892-6550, ext. 1421. The cost is $30.00, payable by cash or check only, at the time of service.
  3. MMR immunization records – If born after December 31, 1956, you will need to provide proof of immunity (titer test) or medical records verifying that your Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) vaccinations are up-to-date before the first day of work. All employment offers are contingent upon providing complete MMR records, satisfactory results of the background check, and Board approval.
