Salary Range: $5,047 - $7,395 per month, plus additional pay for DPSST certifications.
The DETECTIVE position is full-time, 40 hours (plus regular required overtime) on a rotating shift basis (day/swing/night), Civil Service, and Union Represented.
The Columbia County Sheriff's Office is looking for an experienced Detective to be a part of the team dedicated to solving community problems, the reduction of crime, and the preservation of laws, ordinances and the constitutional rights of all people within our jurisdiction.

DUTIES: Conduct law enforcement and crime prevention and investigation activities relating to criminal law enforcement in the County to include:
- Investigating complex cases including Rape, Robbery, Sexual Abuse, Identity Theft, Forgery, Terrorist Threats, and Homicides.
- Interviewing suspects, victims, and witnesses.
- Identifying, collecting, and processing evidence.
- Documenting crime scenes or evidence using digital photography.
- Preparing search and arrest warrants, as well as other court orders.
- Writing accurate, detailed, and professional reports.
- Providing professional and effective courtroom testimony.
- Maintaining a good working reputation with prosecutors.
- Investigating cases to their natural conclusion.
- Assisting the patrol division or partner agencies on major crimes when called upon.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: High school graduate, preferably with additional college level education in the field of law enforcement, equivalent to an Associate's Degree. Must have at least 4 years' experience as a certified police officer. Oregon DPSST Basic Police certification is required that is current. The County will also accept equivalent certification under the same terms from another state.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Possession of DPSST certification as a Police Officer. Possession of, or ability to obtain within six (6) months of employment, Law Enforcement Data System certification (LEDS). Possession of, or ability to obtain within three (3) months of employment, a current first aid/CPR card. Possession of an appropriate Oregon motor vehicle operator's license and must be insurable under the County's liability coverage.
SPECIAL NECESSARY QUALIFICATIONS: The hiring process includes a comprehensive personal history background inquiry as well as physical, psychological, and medical testing components. Candidates must meet and maintain all hiring and certification requirements as mandated by Oregon DPSST.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY: Must demonstrate work history of thorough investigations leading to the arrest and prosecution of suspects. Exceptional knowledge of state and county criminal, traffic, civil, juvenile, fish and game and marine laws; police methods and procedures; laws governing arrest, search and seizure and the criminal justice system, including courtroom testimony; and of police investigative procedures and techniques. Excellent knowledge of police policies and procedures. Familiarity with computers systems and their use.
Skill to properly utilize police equipment and techniques including firearms and restraining devices; and to conduct investigations, collect, evaluate, and analyze facts and draw correct conclusions. Demonstrated skill in preparing various types of search and arrest warrants at the investigative level. Excellent skill in conducting criminal interviews and interrogations. Adept at identifying, documenting, and collecting evidence. Must have a history of effective communication with criminal suspects, victims, and witnessess.
Ability to efficiently and effectively operate equipment used in the performance of duties assigned. Ability to operate equipment safely under adverse conditions. Ability to act effectively in emergency situations. Ability to effectively control suspects in all situations, including the ability to physically restrain unruly suspects. Ability to work with Canine Officers and their Handlers. Ability to maintain harmonious and effective working relationships with fellow employees, other agencies, County officials and the general public. Ability to work independently while also demonstrating dependability and reliability. Must be self-motivated with a high level of self-initiated activity. Ability to be flexible, working long and varied shift hours and the ability to be on-call. Demonstrated ability to conduct thorough case investigations and write detailed, professional reports.
