POSITION SUMMARY
Installs and supports communications equipment and hardware within the guidelines of local, state, and federal laws, county ordinances, county policies and procedures, departmental regulations, and technical manuals. Provides configuration and support for routers, switches, firewalls, wireless equipment, Voice Over IP phone systems and cabling technologies. Works with co-workers, supervisors, and employees in other departments, vendors, consultants, and other professionals to provide technical and networking support.

Work is performed in an office and a computer room. This work area is sometimes noisy. Work requires intermittent sitting, standing, stooping or walking and lifting computer equipment up to 50 pounds.
Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of a degree in a course of study related to occupational field. Sufficient experience to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usual interpreted to require 2 or more years of related experience, Cisco or CompTIA Network certification preferred, but not required. NATURE AND SCOPE
This position is responsible for the configuration, maintenance, and technical support of the County’s Cisco infrastructure hardware, Wireless LAN, network security systems, and Voice Over IP phone systems.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Install new infrastructure devices related to Local Area Network (LAN) and Wide Area Network (WAN) communications
- Perform troubleshooting and problem-solving activities on Cisco network equipment including routers, switches, firewalls, Voice Over IP phone systems, and network security devices
- Perform project management of communications infrastructure and requests
- Perform maintenance of networks and system operation procedures
- Monitor network performance and health and provide network performance statistics
- Provide network data security with various devices and tools
- Schedule the repair of communications equipment covered by warranties and maintenance contracts
- Perform network equipment hardware and software upgrades
- Identify and remedy network performance bottlenecks
- Establish connectivity and uptime service level agreements
- Maintain departmental inventory records for hardware and software
- Collaborate with Service Desk to resolve trouble tickets and end user issues
- Provide on-call support for network and communications problems
- Develop Standard Operating Procedures for Communication Services
- Interface with vendors on new infrastructure order, implementation, and repairs
- Maintain database of all communication lines and equipment
- Train users on IP Voice systems and other related data systems
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of communications technology and concepts, Cisco network devices (to include routers, switches, and firewalls), Voice Over IP phone systems, and network security devices
- Familiarity with LAN/WAN/WLAN structure, design, and set up
- Knowledge of network utilization, monitoring, and status using network monitoring programs and applications
- Knowledge of network data security
- Knowledge of hardware configurations, software, operating systems, manual systems, applications systems, data communications, networking, federal, state and local legal requirements, County and departmental policies and procedures
- Skill in troubleshooting, problem-solving, and operation of diagnostic tools
- Skill in the use and application of proper judgment in all activities
- Skill in written and oral communications
- Ability to work independently
DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
