PURPOSE

This individual is responsible for a variety of tasks that support Columbia Area Career Center students and instructors, including coordinating the CACC comprehensive recruitment efforts, placement of CACC students, and providing career guidance to CACC students.

 

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

  • Coordinates comprehensive recruitment efforts for CACC by:

    • Collaborating with counselors and administration at all CPS and non-CPS sending schools to host recruitment events

    • Coordinating and supporting tours of CACC with prospective students

    • Collaborating with CACC staff to execute recruitment efforts

  • Coordinates proper student placement of prospective and current CACC students by:
    • Planning and developing the CACC Course Schedule
    • Communicating with counselors about CACC programs of study
    • Communicating with counselors about the preferential enrollment procedures to ensure appropriate placement for the full engagement of CACC students
    • Providing individual student advisement
    • Working collaboratively with CACC Student Services staff
  • Coordinates secondary to post-secondary student placement by:
    • Coordinating college and career events
    • Supporting 180-day follow-up
    • Collaborating with CACC staff on work-based learning experiences
    • Supporting dual credit and early college opportunities
    • Supporting CTE testing
  • Prioritizes and manages multiple projects and deadlines
  • Providing and supporting responsive services for students
  • Be familiar with social services agencies serving student needs
  • Assists in recruitment, selection, and retention activities for CTE secondary programs
  • Maintains open, positive communications with teachers and administrators
  • Other responsibilities as assigned by the Director

Performs other duties as necessary to support the mission and vision of Columbia Public School District.

Reports To:        Director of CACC and Director of Secondary School Counseling

 

Supervises:        None

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

Minimum:  Master’s degree in School Guidance and Counseling and Certificate for Secondary Counselor (grades 7-12), or Career Education Counselor certification, or ability to obtain either certification.

Language: Read, analyze and interpret professional journals, Board policy, administrative procedures, and forms; Complete forms, write reports and engage in written correspondence with parents;  present information effectively and respond to questions; Speak to students and parents in groups of various sizes, as well as engage in one-on-one communication; Demonstrate excellent listening and non-verbal communication skills.

 

Computation: Work with mathematical concepts, such as probability and statistical inference; Apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.

 

Reasoning: Solve a variety of problems in many different situations; Interpret instructions presented in written, oral, diagram or schedule form; Apply knowledge of current educational theory and instructional techniques while presenting subject matter to students; Demonstrate executive functions such as planning, organizing, remembering, and regulating information and behavior as they pertain to student performance and achievement.

 

Other Skills and Abilities:  Identify needs and abilities of individual students and adapt methods accordingly; Establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers and parents; Perform multiple tasks simultaneously; Maintain confidentiality of student information.

 

Technology: Perform basic computer functions such as word processing and internet use; Use district software for finding student information; Utilize smart boards, projectors and other instructional technology provided by the district.

 

Physical Demands: An individual who holds this position must have the ability to: Speak and hear in an environment where numerous conversations and activities may be taking place simultaneously, move around the classroom to interact with and manage students/groups of students, and read handwritten or printed material.

 

Attendance: Consistent and regular attendance is an essential function of this position.

Conditions and Environment: The individual who holds this position will regularly work in a school environment that is noisy and active.  Occasionally the individual will be required to work outdoors for short periods of time to perform such tasks as loading and unloading students from district transportation.
