Role Summary
The CNC Laser Operator I is an entry-level, trainable position responsible for supporting production through the safe and accurate operation of CNC laser cutting equipment. This role focuses on running established programs, material handling, part identification, and basic quality checks. Operator I positions are designed as feeder roles for advancement into higher-level CNC and fabrication roles at DSM.
Key ResponsibilitiesProduction & Machine Operation
- Load and unload sheet and plate material using forklifts, cranes, vacuum lifts, or tables as appropriate.
- Operate CNC laser cutting equipment by running approved programs per job traveler and cut list.
- Remove finished parts, skeletons, and drops safely from the table.
- Sort, label, and stage parts accurately for downstream operations.
- Maintain a consistent workflow and notify supervision of material shortages or job completion.
Quality & Inspection
- Perform first-piece and in-process inspections using tape measures and calipers.
- Visually inspect parts for cut quality issues such as excessive dross, incomplete cuts, or burn marks.
- Verify part quantities, dimensions, and labeling match traveler requirements.
- Escalate quality concerns immediately to prevent scrap and rework.
Housekeeping & Maintenance Support
- Maintain a clean and organized laser area in accordance with 5S standards.
- Assist with routine cleaning tasks, including slat cleaning, scrap removal, and area organization.
- Monitor consumables and notify leads of wear or replacement needs.
- Report alarms, machine abnormalities, or safety concerns promptly.
Safety Responsibilities
- Follow all DSM safety policies and procedures, including PPE, material handling, and machine guarding.
- Safely handle sharp edges, heavy materials, and moving equipment.
- Comply with lockout/tagout and hazard communication requirements.
Scope of Role (Operator I)
- Run existing CNC laser programs; no programming or nesting responsibilities.
- No independent parameter tuning beyond approved basic adjustments.
- Troubleshooting and maintenance are performed with support from leads or maintenance personnel.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Ability to follow written work instructions and job travelers.
- Willingness to learn measurement tools and inspection processes.
- Reliable attendance and strong safety mindset.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced fabrication environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous CNC, laser cutting, or fabrication shop experience.
- Forklift and/or overhead crane experience or willingness to become certified.
- Basic blueprint reading experience.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
- Lift up to 50 lbs; heavier materials handled with mechanical assistance.
- Ability to work safely around sharp edges, hot parts, and heavy equipment.
