Faculty and staff at the CSU Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratories (VDL) are among the nation’s finest in their fields of expertise and offer comprehensive diagnostic services. The mission of the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (VDL) is to provide timely, accurate and pertinent animal disease diagnostic services and educational outreach to veterinarians, animal industries and animal interests. The Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory will strive to meet the goals the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences and the University through research to develop new approaches to disease identification, investigation, prevention and through education of professional veterinary medical, graduate, and post-doctoral students.

This position is designed to support the varied needs of the Colorado State University Diagnostic Laboratories. The successful candidate will have the flexibility to work in multiple sections and the willingness to accept widely varied tasks and assignments. Laboratory technical work is not guaranteed and is based on both business need and qualifications/experience level of selected applicant. Candidate must be available for flexible work hours with some work outside normal operating hours. More than 40 hours of work may be required some weeks, depending on case load (overtime will be paid). The position is full-time with determination of schedule based on current section needs and input from the employee. Weekend work may be required, based on case load and scheduling needs.
Examples of tasks can include but are not limited to:
Bachelor’s degree completed or in progress in microbiology, biology, environmental science or related field.

Experience working in a laboratory setting.

This position will organize submission paperwork for the business office and laboratory sections. The incumbent will perform data entry of accession information into the LIMS system verifying correct veterinarian/owner information and test chosen. Knowledge of tests, times/dates run, and pricing information is essential. Scanning documents into appropriate accession and updating data/charges is a function of this position. The incumbent may also be responsible for Invoicing cases after lab personnel complete testing. This requires verification of correct test choices and prices, application of any panel/screen variables, and assurance of correct billing party.

This position might perform general laboratory duties including but not limited to:
This position will open packages received via courier, Fedex/UPS/USPS, and those dropped off by hospital staff or area clinics. Review submission form(s) to ensure all information is accurate. Assign accession number(s) and deliver specimens with necessary form(s) to the appropriate area/section/laboratory. Submission documents are scanned into LIMS system before routing. Centrifuge specimens and distributes blood, body fluids, urine and other samples to appropriate laboratory sections. Drive company vehicle to CSU Central Receiving, FedEx, UPS, and/or other locations to retrieve packages and laboratory specimens. Perform courier route to local clinics, as needed. Provide support services for the Sample Receiving area of the laboratory including but not limited to: stocking supplies, daily and bi-annual cleaning of entire area, temperature logging of refrigerators & freezer, unloading palleted supplies and delivery to appropriate laboratory section.

- Data entry, case review, & invoice customers for services provided
- Open packages received via /UPS/Federal Express, accession specimens, & deliver to appropriate lab(s)
- Perform daily courier route to retrieve specimens from local customers (requires a valid driver license)
- Centrifuge tubes containing blood or other body fluids (possibly infectious), transfer plasma or serum, and/or split specimens to deliver to multiple laboratory sections
- Laboratory sample organization, preparation, and/or testing (position may include some testing based on applicant qualifications/experience level and needs of various sections – laboratory work is not guaranteed)
- Make sample collection media tubes
- Assemble sample collection kits
- Unload palleted supplies and deliver to appropriate laboratory section
- Various support duties for other members of the diagnostic laboratory staff and faculty.
Bachelor’s degree completed or in progress in microbiology, biology, environmental science or related field.
