The Area Coordinator is responsible for supporting the total function of the residence hall(s) inclusive of student development, administration, and staffing. The scope of the job is broad and requires skills, knowledge, and ability to exercise discretion in diverse topics including student development, student conduct, crisis and facilities management, policy implementation, and administration including safety for card/key access.

The Area Coordinator assists in the training of and supervising of graduate and student staff members. The Area Coordinator serves as a liaison to the University community including Student Life departments. The Area Coordinator lives in the Residence Hall and may oversee another area, s/he oversees housing operations, processes room changes, handles resident conflicts, and ensures consistent maintenance and housekeeping. S/he also assists in planning and monitoring hall programs and budgets as well as supports diversity and social justice initiatives on campus and within the community. The Area Coordinator reports to the Assistant Director of Residence Education. This is a live-on/in position.

Primary Duties

  • Supervision - Supervises graduate interns, resident assistant staff, and desk assistant staff for the area assigned. Meets with these individuals on a regular (weekly or bi-weekly) basis, completes performance evaluations, and provides guidance and direction for leadership development. Maintains office hours. Available for emergency on-call situations on a rotational basis. Acts a role model for staff and students.
  • Housing Operations - Manages keys, handles room changes, and roommate conflicts. Facilitates occupancy reporting and room checks. Facilitates the completion and submission of all housing related paperwork. Assists with Summer Conferences, Programs, and Events as assigned by the Assistant Directors.
  • Training - Assists with training the student staff, including Graduate Residence Life Coordinators, Resident Assistants, Desk Assistant, and Student Work Crew. Scope includes all aspects of staff training, including emergency response, conflict resolution, programming, and community facilitation. Advises Residence Life Committees/projects as assigned.
  • Crisis Management and Student Conduct - Provides "on-duty" coverage on a rotating basis. Must be able to complete 1 week of duty on a rotating basis. Responds and exercises independent judgment when appropriate for an emergency and or crisis situation. Assists with crisis response when needed regardless of on-duty status. Works closely with campus partners, the Sheriff's Department, and Counseling Center staff. Reviews and submits incident reports in a timely manner. Conducts inquiries, investigations, and follow-up on discipline cases. Investigates addresses and resolves resident disputes, common area vandalism, inappropriate student behavior, harassment, etc.
  • Programming, Advising, and Academic Support - Coordinates programming events within the building/area to enhance the living learning community. Works with the graduate and student staff to attend programs and events planned and sponsored by other campus partners. Advises students dealing with academic, social, and personal problems including adjusting to campus and community. Assists in the implementation and assessment of Residential Curriculum.
  • Student Development - Utilizes on-going education-related skills and knowledge of the college students' developmental process throughout duties, such as making counseling referrals, emergency response, programming, and education. Applies theories attained in postgraduate study; reciprocally, utilizes experiences to enrich future study.
  • Liaison - Represents the department to the University. Maintains effective working relationships and open communication with Physical Plant, Admissions, Information Technology Services, other Student Life departments, and faculty members. Serves on University committees as needed and as time permits.

Ancillary Duties

  • Performs other miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Higher Education experience
  • Evidence of strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • A proven track record of successfully organizing programming events for student groups and organizations

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in College Student Personnel, Higher Education, or related field
  • Experience with residential programming and housing management
  • Membership with regional housing organization
  • Experience working with database systems including housing management systems such as HMS, StarRez and CS-Gold
