Standards Engineering Support Coordinator

The Energy Standards Engineering team at Colorado Springs Utilities ensures that our equipment, materials, and construction standards meet both the current and future needs of our customers, our community, and our organization.  Our team’s mission is to strategically and collaboratively support the future of safe, reliable, and competitively priced energy for the Colorado Springs community. Our team is hiring a Standards Engineering Support Coordinator to support technical standards requests across a wide range of both electric and natural gas utility disciplines. You will work with a dynamic team of individuals in constantly changing and intellectually challenging work. In this job, you will have the opportunity to learn and contribute to our natural gas standards and O&M manuals, electric distribution-substation-transmission standards, as well as perform material reviews and cost analysis.

Key Areas of Focus: 

  • Prepare construction standard drawings (CAD) and materials specifications; ensure that construction materials meet specifications.
  • Communicate material changes with procurement by performing Part Data Maintenance (PDM) requests.
  • Provide technical support to a range of utility disciplines, including electric distribution, street lighting, natural gas distribution, natural gas O&M Manuals, electric substations, and electric transmission.
  • Assist with engineering projects led by standards engineers
  • Manages projects, including analyzing and determining scope, schedules, and coordination with internal and external agencies.
  • Inspect the construction, installation, and maintenance of facilities, service lines, and equipment.
  • Support updates to the Electric Distribution, Substation, and Transmission Construction Standards Books and the Natural Gas Materials Catalog.
  • Provide technical assistance to other sections, departments, and external customers.
  • Coordinate yearly review and publication of Line Extensions and Service Standards (LESS) documents.
  • Perform and monitor trial installations of new hardware and materials.
  • Support construction engineers in the interpretation and application of standards.
  • Monitor industry trends for changes and utility best practices.
  • Ensure construction practices, drawings, and industry references are updated as needed for new materials or hardware.

Who You Are:
Associate’s Degree in Engineering (Civil, Mechanical, Electrical), CAD/Design, Project Management, Construction Management, Engineering Technology, or a closely related field from an accredited university; or completion of an approved apprenticeship program.

Required Experience:
You will most likely have 7 years of experience in a relevant engineering-oriented field.

  • Experience creating standard or construction drawings in AutoCAD
  • Expertise in construction standards and material specifications
  • Experience working with manufacturers or vendors and coordination with procurement
  • Experience in the design, construction, or maintenance of electric or natural gas utility infrastructure
  • Collaboration with construction crews or field operations
  • Experience providing support to engineering teams and engineering projects
  • Strong analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills
  • A mindset of curiosity, teamwork, and continuous improvement
  • Working knowledge of the MS Office suite of software

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly (2/3 or more of the time) to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Sedentary work. Even though the weight lifted may be of only negligible amount, a job should be rated Light Work: (1) when it requires walking or standing to a significant degree; or (2) when it requires sitting most of the time but entails pushing and/or pulling of arm or leg controls; and/or (3) when the job requires a production rate pace entailing the constant pushing and/or pulling of materials even though the weight of those is negligible.
