Job Description

The Sexual Assault Resource Prosecutor is CDAC’s sexual violence prosecution and policy expert. This attorney supports and assists the state’s prosecutors in the prosecution of sex offenses, represents them on boards and task forces relevant to sex offenses and sex offenders, and assists in developing appropriate legislative policy in response to sexual violence. The position reports directly to the Executive Director.

Prosecution

The Sexual Assault Resource Prosecutor serves as CDAC’s subject matter expert on all matters related to the prosecution of sex offenses and the sentencing and treatment of sex offenders by:

  • acting as a liaison between and with each district attorneys’ office, ensuring the dissemination of legal developments, resources, and related information to the state’s prosecutors, including ongoing comprehensive training;
  • maintaining ongoing legal expertise and knowledge of investigative and prosecutorial tools and efforts as they advance in the special victims field; and
  • serving as a special deputy district attorney on individual cases throughout the state as deemed appropriate and necessary by the Executive Director.

Policy

The Sexual Assault Resource Prosecutor represents the interests of prosecutors and crime victim and survivors in combatting sexual violence, intimate partner violence and other victims-survivor related issues through appropriate policy efforts, including:

  • Representing the interests of state prosecutors on the Sex Offender Management Board, with substantive participation in the review and revision of its standards for the identification, evaluation, monitoring, management, and treatment of sex offenders;
  • Registering as a lobbyist on behalf of the Colorado District Attorneys’ Council and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders and legislators;
  • Assisting in the drafting, review, and consideration of all legislation relevant to sexual offenses, intimate partner violence and other victim-survivor related bills;
  • Testifying when necessary before the Colorado General Assembly or other public bodies.

This position may, but is not required to, act as a media liaison for CDAC on issues related to sexual offenses or sex offenders and is expected to assist in other areas of criminal justice policy as needed at CDAC.

Qualifications

The Sexual Assault Resource Prosecutor must:

  • Be licensed to practice law in Colorado, in good standing;
  • Have 5 to 10 years of prosecution experience, with at least 2 to 3 years of experience prosecuting sexual offenses – Colorado experience preferred;
  • Have a strong foundation in the current statutory scheme for sexual offenses and offenders;
  • Have strong oral and written advocacy and public speaking skills; and
  • Have experience in multidisciplinary teamwork;
  • Have significant attention to detail and strong legal and data research skills;
  • Be competent in utilizing all Microsoft programs, collaborative communications technologies such as Google Drive, Microsoft Sharepoint, Action, Adobe;
  • Be self-sufficient in all aspects of the job – there is no support staff for this position.

Job Attributes/Requirements

This is a full-time position with regular office hours expected Monday through Friday. There is an option to work remotely up to three days a week, although this applicant should be prepared to work in office with the team for the initial months of beginning in this role. The daily schedule is flexible within core hour limitations – communication is key. The applicant must be available for numerous in person meetings in the Denver metro area on a regular basis throughout the year and must live in the greater Denver metro area. During the legislative session (mid-Jan to mid-May) the applicant will be required to appear in the Capitol or meet with legislators on a regular basis (often Mon-Wed), with some nighttime hours required. During this time period, remote working options may be significantly limited. The job also requires some travel out of the metro area with possible overnights (approximately 10%) and other out-of-office requirements (annual conferences, trainings and special deputy work). Office location is 3600 S. Yosemite Street, Denver, CO. Salary range: $132,500 – 142,500 per year/ DOE. PERA/Kaiser Health/Delta Dental Benefits.
