Description Of Job
About the Position
This position operates under the guidance of the Region 3 Safety Officer and assists with the operations and activities of the Region's Occupational Safety and Health programs. This position will develop technical tracking means for various region safety related programs. This position will aid in the evaluation of hazardous conditions/ practices and provide technical assistance in the measuring, auditing, and evaluating of hazard controls and safety training. This position handles assigned portions of the Region's Occupational Safety and Health programs.

Your duties and responsibilities
will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • With established guidance provided by the RSO, implements and maintains a program for identification of hazards evaluation and assessment of the probability and severity of loss events and accidents.
  • Conducts reviews of processes and operations for potential failure modes and their causes and effects.
  • Reviews. compiles, analyzes, and interprets data from accident and loss prevention reports, along with other sources, regarding injuries, illnesses, and damage to determine causes and trends.
  • Implements and maintains a tracking database program designed to reduce or eliminate hazards such as roadside hazards, PPE requirements, sight specific project requirements, etc. preferably before they occur, by reducing or eliminating the cause of exposures, accidents, and loss events.
  • Stays up to date on all statutes, rules, regulations, etc. pertaining to employee safety and health and work zone safety.
  • Serves on the Region Safety Committee to assist the Region Safety Officer.
  • Assists in the development and tracking of safety awareness recognition programs that recognize safety achievement and completes assigned portions of those programs.
  • Provides safety information as directed; disseminates information to appropriate personnel.
  • Schedule allows for attendance at Region ARB, Safety Committee and region Safety Meetings.
  • Coordinates priorities and scheduling for multiple meetings with the RSO.
  • Tracks and measures accident reductions.
  • Directly observes work activities to analyze and identify unrecognized and/or unaddressed safety hazards.
  • Assists with the organization of plans for addressing emergency preparedness issues that could affect employees, staff, facilities, and infrastructure.
  • Attends all required safety training.

Work Environment

  • Your schedule will primarily be 8:00 am – 5:00 pm work hours, Monday-Friday, with the opportunity for a flexible schedule
  • Approximately 50% spent in the field, 50% spent in the office.
  • Regular travel throughout the Region during work hours.
  • Occasional overnight travel throughout Colorado
  • Required to operate CDOT vehicles
  • May be required to respond at any time to accident / injury scene involving CDOT personnel.
  • Required to work in proximity to heavy traffic, in all weather conditions, and on variable terrain.
  • New employees to the State will be paid biweekly. There are 26 biweekly pay periods in a year.

Experience Only
Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

  • At least 4 years of experience related to occupational health and safety, industrial safety engineering, industrial hygiene, or other experience relevant to the duties of this position.

AND

  • At least two (2) years of experience with a primary focus on occupational health and safety and/or OSHA construction safety.

Experience & Education

  • A combination of at least six (6) years of experience and education that includes: Coursework from an accredited college or university with coursework in occupational health and safety, industrial safety engineering, industrial hygiene, or another field of study related to the duties of this position will be considered.

Conditions of Employment

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Commercial Driver's License Class A unrestricted for a minimum of two (2) years.
  • May be required to pass a controlled substance test (i.e. drug test), and DOT physical through our medical provider.

  • May be required to live within thirty (30) minutes' driving time in normal weather conditions to be able to respond in a timely manner after being notified to report to work. Knowledge of an emergency or hazardous condition may be considered to be notification to report to workstation.

Preferred Qualifications
Theexceptional applicantwill be an experienced safety professional and will possess the proven ability or accomplishment in the following:

  • Demonstrated success with the duties listed in the Description of the Job section.
  • Years of State service experience related to the duties of this position.
  • Highest work/personal ethics and integrity.
  • Consistently demonstrated passion and growth in safety leadership, innovation, and expertise.
  • Knowledge of OSHA guidelines, OSHA construction regulations, and occupational safety and health theories, policies, and best practices.
  • Understanding of loss control and risk management concepts and safety plan review.
  • Certification as a Certified Safety Professional by the American Board of Safety.
  • Experience performing health and safety functions, preferably in the construction industry.
  • Experience performing safety and hazard analyses, conducting investigations, and developing recommendations and/or programs for improving occupational safety and health.
  • Experience training others on safety best practices.
  • Knowledge of heavy equipment including front-end loaders, motor graders, and snow plows.
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines and be adaptable to changing assignments.
  • Ability to work with a variety of stakeholders with sensitivity to their needs, priorities, promises made and commitments.
  • Effective interpersonal and relationship-building skills.
  • Strong time and project management skills, including prioritization and multi-tasking ability.
  • Demonstrated excellent reasoning, investigative, analytical, and problem-solving ability.
  • Excellent facilitation, presentation, and communication skills.
  • Strong attention to technical detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to work effectively in both independent and team situations.
  • Fluency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Gmail and Google Applications, SAP, and the ability to quickly learn other software systems.
