What are the responsibilities and job description for the Hotel Sales Manager position at Colony House Motor Lodge?
Hotel Sales Manager
Colony House Motor Lodge
Roanoke, Virginia
About Colony House
Colony House Motor Lodge is an independent, family-owned boutique hotel in Roanoke, Virginia, blending thoughtful design, genuine hospitality and the spirit of the open road.
Built in 1959 and recently restored, our mid-century modern motor lodge is a reimagined local landmark. More than a place to stay, Colony House brings together travelers and locals through creative gatherings, shared experiences and a genuine connection to the community.
The Opportunity
We're looking for a personable, motivated and commercially minded Hotel Sales Manager to help grow our business, develop relationships and introduce Colony House to guests and groups.
Working closely with our General Manager, you'll focus on corporate accounts, group bookings, meetings, retreats and private events. You'll proactively identify opportunities, build relationships with businesses and organizations and help turn those connections into lasting partnerships and revenue.
You'll contribute to sales planning, revenue strategies and creative initiatives that strengthen the hotel's market position.
This is a hands-on role that calls for an entrepreneurial spirit, initiative and a willingness to get out and make things happen. We're looking for someone who enjoys connecting with people, developing new ideas and creating opportunities rather than waiting for business to come through the door. You'll have room for independence and creativity, along with the support of a collaborative team.
You'll also be an ambassador for Colony House, helping us build a business that's both commercially successful and meaningfully connected to the community.
Previous hotel sales experience is welcome but not essential. We're equally interested in candidates from hospitality, events, business development or other client-facing backgrounds who bring strong commercial instincts, good judgment and enthusiasm for what we're building.
What You'll Do
Sales & Business Development
- Proactively identify and develop new business, including corporate accounts, group stays, meetings, retreats and private events.
- Build and maintain relationships with local and regional businesses, organizations, travel planners and event producers.
- Manage sales inquiries, prepare proposals, conduct property tours, negotiate agreements and follow through to secure bookings.
- Develop repeat business through attentive service, consistent communication and strong client relationships.
- Maintain an organized sales pipeline, tracking leads, bookings and progress toward agreed sales goals.
- Stay informed about local market trends, competitors and opportunities to attract new business.
Revenue Strategy & Planning
- Work with the General Manager to establish sales priorities, revenue goals and strategies to maximize occupancy and profitability.
- Monitor booking trends, occupancy patterns, market demand and competitor pricing to identify opportunities for new business.
- Contribute to market-driven rate strategies, group pricing and promotional offers.
- Participate in sales forecasting, budgeting and financial planning, providing insights to support informed business decisions.
- Identify opportunities to generate revenue during slower periods and strengthen year-round demand.
Groups, Events & Community Partnerships
- Promote the hotel's accommodations and event spaces for meetings, celebrations, activations and group gatherings.
- Coordinate booking details with clients, hotel staff and outside vendors to ensure a smooth transition from sales to operations.
- Collaborate with the General Manager and other departments to align sales commitments with operational capabilities and the guest experience.
- Help develop creative group packages, partnerships and experiences that distinguish Colony House from traditional hotels.
- Represent Colony House as a thoughtful, enthusiastic ambassador.
Who You Are
- A natural relationship builder. Personable, outgoing and genuinely interested in connecting with people.
- Commercially minded. Confident and persistent in pursuing opportunities, developing business and delivering results.
- Entrepreneurial and driven. Resourceful, proactive and willing to hustle to make things happen. You spot opportunities, take initiative and enjoy turning ideas and relationships into real business.
- Organized and dependable. Detail-oriented, responsive and committed to following through.
- A strong communicator. Comfortable preparing proposals, leading property tours, negotiating agreements and representing the hotel professionally.
- Collaborative and adaptable. Diplomatic, open to feedback and able to work effectively with different personalities and departments.
- Independent and resourceful. Self-motivated, comfortable taking initiative and capable of exercising good judgment.
- Community-minded. Enthusiastic about independent hospitality, design, travel and the people and businesses that make Roanoke special.
- Comfortable with technology. Familiar with everyday business software, spreadsheets and sales tracking tools, with a willingness to learn new systems.
Experience & Qualifications
We're open to early- and mid-career candidates with experience in sales, hospitality, events, business development or another client-facing field.
Previous hotel sales experience is helpful but not required. An understanding of hotel operations, group sales, revenue management or budgeting would be beneficial, but we place equal value on initiative, strong communication skills, sound judgment and a demonstrated ability to build relationships and generate business.
Occasional evening or weekend availability may be needed for events or client activities.
Why Colony House?
Colony House isn't a corporate hotel. We're an independent, family-owned business with a distinctive personality, a rich history and an ambitious vision for the future. You'll work closely with hotel leadership and a small, collaborative team, with the opportunity to make a visible impact on a growing business. We value thoughtful hospitality, creativity, initiative and people who take pride in their work.
