Position Goal
The goal of the Dean of Students is to foster a safe, inclusive, and supportive school environment that promotes positive student behavior, academic engagement, and social-emotional growth. This position leads the implementation of equitable discipline systems, restorative practices, and behavioral supports aligned with district policies. In collaboration with school leadership, the Dean of Students supports a positive school culture by addressing behavioral concerns, using data to inform interventions, and building strong relationships with students, staff, and families. The role also includes developing knowledge of building leadership practices, including academics and the Colonial Teaching and Learning Framework, through regular classroom walk-throughs and collaboration with instructional staff. Through proactive support, consistent communication, and a commitment to fairness, the Dean of Students ensures students are equipped to succeed academically, socially, and emotionally.

Minimum Requirements

- Must be eligible or hold valid State of Delaware certification as a Teacher.
- Currently enrolled or hold certification as an Assistant Principal/Principal.
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience as a teacher.
- Acceptable Criminal Background Report and no entries on Child Protection Registry in the State of Delaware.
- Successful completion of required Praxis II tests and student teaching placement.
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. Master's degree preferred..
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, staff, administration and the general public.
- Show evidence of knowledge regarding evidence and research-based strategies known to be effective in promoting student learning and achievement for students.
- Demonstrates sensitivity to issues impacting various cultural, ethnic and socioeconomic groups.
- Proficient in Technology, such as Microsoft and Google Applications, Classlink, Schoology, Infinite Campus, etc.
- Demonstrates understanding and ability to perform job related tasks.
- Regular attendance is an essential function of the position.
- Must be able to teach/serve students remotely and in person depending on the needs of their students.

- Assist the school administration in monitoring and supervising student behavior through consistent enforcement of the district's Code of Conduct and applicable policies.
- Support the development and implementation of a positive school culture through restorative practices, proactive behavior supports, and equitable discipline systems.
- Confer with students, parents/guardians, and staff to address and resolve disciplinary issues, attendance concerns, and behavioral challenges in a timely and professional manner.
- Collaborate with the guidance department, special education staff, and administration to share relevant student information, as appropriate, to support student success.
- Assist teachers and staff with classroom management strategies and student behavior interventions, including modeling and reinforcing best practices.
- Monitor student movement and supervision throughout the school day, including arrival, dismissal, bus loading/unloading, hallways, cafeteria, and other common areas.
- Respond to and document disciplinary incidents, ensuring accurate records are maintained in accordance with district procedures.
- Utilize student data (behavior, attendance, and trends) to inform interventions, supports, and school-wide decision-making.
- Participate in classroom walk-throughs to build knowledge of instructional practices, student engagement, and the Colonial Teaching and Learning Framework in collaboration with building leadership.
- Support conflict resolution and problem-solving among students using restorative and de-escalation strategies.
- Communicate regularly with families regarding student behavior, expectations, and supports to promote accountability and partnership.
- Assist in the development and implementation of behavior plans, including collaboration with special education teams when applicable.
- Maintain a visible and active presence throughout the school to build relationships and ensure a safe, orderly environment.
- Comply with all Federal, State and Local regulations and policies: accurately complete required paperwork within designated timelines, utilize district resources (i.e Employee Handbook, District website, Collaborative Agreement, Professional Code of Conduct, Administrative procedures, School District Board Policies, etc.) to maintain professionalism and avoid noncompliance, and cooperate with compliance monitoring and dispute resolution activities.
- Attend professional development programs, mandated training, and self-selected workshops/conferences, courses, etc.
- Maintain current certifications (including clock hours via DEEDS), stay current on evidence based instructional strategies and technology and actively engage in required and self- selected professional learning.
- Perform other duties/responsibilities as assigned by the building principal and/or supervisor.
