Job Title: Extended School Year (ESY) Nurse
Location: Stoneham Public Schools
Reports To: Director of Special Education
Position Summary:
The Extended School Year (ESY) Nurse provides comprehensive health services to students participating in the district’s summer ESY program. The nurse ensures a safe and healthy environment that supports students’ medical, physical, and educational needs, particularly for students with disabilities who require ongoing health-related services to access their programming.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide direct nursing care to students, including medication administration, treatments, and health procedures in accordance with physician orders and district policies
- Monitor and respond to student health needs, including chronic conditions, medical alerts, and emergencies
- Review and implement Individualized Healthcare Plans (IHPs), Emergency Care Plans (ECPs), and relevant components of IEPs and 504 plans
- Collaborate with ESY staff, special educators, related service providers, and administrators to support student participation and access to programming
- Maintain accurate and confidential health records in compliance with state and federal regulations (e.g., FERPA, HIPAA where applicable)
- Ensure proper storage, documentation, and handling of medications and medical equipment
- Communicate effectively with families regarding student health needs, incidents, and updates during the ESY program
- Support staff training as needed on student-specific health needs, including emergency protocols (e.g., seizure response, EpiPen administration)
- Adhere to district policies, state nursing regulations, and public health guidelines
- Participate in program planning meetings as requested
Qualifications:
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of employment
- Current CPR/AED and First Aid certification
- Experience working with children and/or students with special needs preferred
- Knowledge of school health regulations, special education law, and student health management
- Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills
Work Schedule:
- M-Th starting July 6 to August 6 from 8:15 to 12:15
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to respond quickly to medical emergencies
- Ability to lift and assist students with mobility needs as required
- Ability to perform nursing tasks in a school environment
