Resident Assistant Job Description
Title: Resident Assistant (RA)
Reports to: Resident Services Director
Work Hours: Eight hour shifts, every other weekend and some holidays. May be required to stay beyond shift in an emergency. The position requires reliable and regular attendance.
Work attire: Standard resident assistant uniform
Position Summary:
Provide assistance with activities of daily living and instrumental activities of daily living to residents. This includes but is not limited to: bathing, dressing, hygiene, toileting, and housekeeping.
Essential Functions:
- Provide assistance with personal hygiene, including bathing, oral care, skin and nail care, hand washing, hair care, shaving, dressing, and bed making.
- Answer residents’ call signals.
- Assist with toileting, including bowel and bladder.
- Report changes in residents’ conditions to professional staff
- Provide residents help with walking, exercising, and moving in and out of bed.
- Assist with mobility, transferring, ambulation, positioning and range of motion.
- Serve and collect food trays when needed.
- Use appropriate and safe body mechanic techniques when lifting and/or transferring residents or supplies.
- Use aseptic technique for the purpose of infection control; this includes good handwashing technique and infection control policies.
- Answer phones, direct visitors, and deliver messages to residents and staff members maintaining confidentiality of all resident care information and assure residents rights and privacy are protected at all times.
- Assist in orienting residents to the environment and routines upon admission and throughout residency as needed.
- Document accurately all assistance given.
- Report to Resident Services Director for written and verbal assignments, which include daily use of individualized Service Plan for assigned residents before initiating care.
- Participate in the planning or resident care through shift reports and resident care staffings meetings when assigned.
- Encourage/assist residents in keeping their rooms clean and orderly.
- Escort residents to appointments as needed.
- Respond to resident emergencies including bleedings, falls, seizures, and performance of Heimlich Maneuver.
- Assist with post-mortem care as assigned.
- Create and maintain an atmosphere of warmth and personal interest as well as a calm environment.
- Other duties assigned by Resident Services Director and administration.
- Provides a warm, welcoming and friendly atmosphere for residents, family, visitors, and staff.

Work Environment:
The Resident Assistant works inside a facility, which is climate controlled at approximately 72 degrees. There is frequent exposure to blood, body tissues and other frequently infectious fluids. There is some exposure to loud and unpleasant noises, dust and chemicals. May be subject to hostile and emotionally upset residents, family members or visitors. Colonial Senior Living is a non-smoking environment.
