Primary Purpose:
Ride buses and assist drivers ensure safe and orderly transportation of students with special needs.


Education/Certification:
High school diploma or GED


Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Ability to follow verbal instructions and communicate effectively
  • Ability to operate safety equipment and adaptive equipment
  • Ability to work well with children with disabilities

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Supervise students as they board and leave bus and cross street.
  • Learn and adapt to each student’s special medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs.
  • Manage student behavior and report student discipline problems to appropriate administrator.
  • Communicate with teachers and parents on an daily basis regarding student behavior while on the bus.
  • Become familiar with all routes to and from school campus to be of assistance to driver.
  • Monitor use of safety and adaptive equipment by students.
  • Follow emergency procedures and help driver administer first aid, if necessary.
  • Supervise use of seat belts, safety vest’s, or star seats by students
  • Operate equipment according to established safety procedures.
  • Follow established procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting, assisting students, etc.
  • Become familiar with and follow procedures established by transportation and special education offices.
  • Help driver keep bus clean.
  • Work irregular hours as needed.

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintain confidentiality of information.
  • Report to work in a timely manner according to the assigned schedule.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned within the appropriate skill and experience capabilities expected for this position.

Wheelchair lift, ramp, lock, and special needs adaptive equipment.

  • Avoid speaking badly about the district and district personnel

Working Conditions:

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Maintain emotional control under stress. Frequent walking, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing and pulling; moderate lifting and carrying. Work outside and inside; work around vehicles and machinery with moving parts; moderate exposure to extreme temperatures and vehicle fumes.

Must be able to evacuate self and students out of the bus in case of an emergency.

Regularly sit, talk, or hear; frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; frequent repetitive hand motions; prolonged use of computer; occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds; occasionally required to stand, walk reach with hands and arms; vision abilities include close vision; and color vision, regularly work with frequent interruptions, maintain emotional control under stress; the noise level is usually moderate. The employee may spend long hours in intense concentration which requires attention to detail and high levels of accuracy. There are a number of deadlines associated with this position, which may cause significant stress. The employee must also deal with a wide variety of people on various issues. Predictable and regular attendance expected.
