Under the direction of an administrator or manager, assists in the preparation and packaging of food items in a cafeteria, snack bar, or for food vending machines; serves food and performs cashiering duties in a cafeteria or snack bar; maintains food service equipment and facilities in a safe, clean, and sanitary condition. Employees in this classification receive direct or general supervision within a framework of well-defined policies and procedures. This job class performs a wide variety of routine to responsible duties related to day-to-day food service/cafeteria operations as assigned.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

 

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices. Essential responsibilities are designated by *.

1. Assists in preparing foods such as sandwiches, salads, salad dressings, hamburgers, and other hot/cold foods. *

2. Assists in preparing baked goods. * 

3. Washes and prepares fruits and vegetables. *

4. Slices, assembles, mixes, stirs, blends, counts, weighs, or measures a variety of ingredients used in food preparation activities. *

5. Wraps and/or packages food items into specified food portions for sale. *

6. Cooks and warms food for serving on site. *

7. Cleans serving counters and storage/work areas to include walk-in iceboxes and freezers. *

8. Washes trays, plates, utensils, pots/pans, and serving equipment. *

9. Packages and properly stores leftover food and supplies. *

10. Assists in the food set-up, preparation, serving, and clean-up for special functions as assigned. *

11. Sets up serving counters/lines/food wells with appropriate food items and supplies. *

12. Serves food items to students and adults. *

13. Replenishes food items as needed during service. *

14. Inventories food on hand before and after meal service. *

15. Restocks food items and supplies as needed; reports supply needs to supervisor.*

16. Directs and supervises student helpers during serving periods. *

17. Performs cashiering duties; receives money and makes change. *

18. Performs related duties that support the overall objective of the position.

 

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

• High school graduation or General Educational Development (GED); AND

• Two (2) years in food service or a customer service-related capacity;

OR

• Any combination of education and experience which would provide the required qualifications for the position. 

 

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: 

Experience working in a cafeteria or snack bar.

• Safe Serve Certification.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Ability to obtain and maintain a Serv Safe Certification throughout employment with the college.

• May be required to possess or demonstrate an ability to obtain a valid driver’s license if driving is required as an essential responsibility of the position.

• May be required to travel for various off-site meetings, trainings, conferences, workshops, and/or events in support of the overall objective of the position.

• Ability to pass “Food Services Assistant Applicant Written Test”: 

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: 

Knowledge of: 

District and college policies and procedures related to the area of assignment.

• Restaurant and institutional quantity food preparation, methods, procedures, and service.

• Food storage and sanitation procedures.

• Food production and/or service line processes.

• Interpret menus, ingredient lists, and preparation instructions.

• Meal planning.

• Kitchen sanitation and applicable safety precautions in performing food service work.

• Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA).

• The appropriate care and use of standard food service applications and tools.

• California Education Code related to the area of assignment.

• Organizational operations, policies, and objectives.

• General functions, policies, rules, and regulations of a community college.

• The proper use and care of kitchen, cafeteria, and snack bar food serving utensils and equipment.

• Basic methods of quality food preparation

• Proper English usage, grammar, spelling, vocabulary, and punctuation. 

• Basic cleaning and sanitation methods and procedures related to food service operations.

• Proper English usage, grammar, spelling, and punctuation. 

• Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy. 

• Operation of computers, software programs and applications, and hardware peripherals.

• Mathematic calculations.

• Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint) to access college email, communications, and work orders related to the area of assignment.

 

Ability to:

Perform the essential responsibilities of the position.

• Sequence food preparation activities in order to serve a variety of food items at the same time.

• Complete simple ingredient measurements. 

• Plan, coordinate, organize, and prioritize workload to meet schedules and timelines.

• Work independently with little direction.

• Learn and effectively apply proper sanitation and safety requirements associated with food preparation.

• Prepare and cook foods served in large quantities.

• Present attractive and properly proportioned foods.

• Apply kitchen sanitation and safety precautions.

• Coordinate flow of communications and information as needed.

• Understand and follow both verbal and written instructions.

• Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

• Read recipes and instructions.

• Perform a variety of food preparation and cleaning tasks.

• Learn to operate assigned food service appliances and equipment in a safe and effective manner.

• Assist in the preparation, serving, and packaging of food items.

• Prepare entrees, salads, and dessert items as assigned.

• Accurately perform routine mathematical calculations using basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

• Meet the physical requirements necessary to perform assigned duties safely and effectively such as lifting heavy cases or standing for prolonged periods of time.

• Establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this classification, employees are regularly required to sit or stand for extended periods of time; talk or hear in person and by telephone; use hands repetitively to finger, handle, feel, operate personal computers and other standard office equipment;use dexterity of hands and fingers to cut and dice food;reach with hands and arms;bend at the waist, kneel,or crouch to file materials,lift boxes, food and supplies, up to 50 pounds on a frequent basis

 

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, ability to distinguish basic shades and colors, and the ability to adjust focus.

 

Employees are frequently required to walk and stand and occasionally lift up to 50 pounds.

 

Mental Demands 

While performing the duties of this classification, incumbents are regularly required to use written and oral communication skills; read and interpret data information, and documents; use math and mathematical reasoning; analyze and solve problems; learn and apply new information and skills; perform highly detailed work under changing intensive deadlines on multiple, concurrent tasks; and interact with District administration, management, staff, students, vendors, the public, elected officials, and others encountered in the course of work, some of whom may be dissatisfied or disruptive.

 

Work Environment 

The work environment describedhereinis representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this classification. Incumbents in this classification mayencounterfrequent interruptions by college personnel, students, and the public.

 

Employees work primarily in a kitchen or dining environment where significant health and safety considerations exist from physical labor and handling of sharp objects, equipment, and volatile/toxic substances; employees may work indoors and outdoors depending on the need of the assignment; employee performs work and mayexperience frequent interruptions; noise levels may vary depending on activities of the office, division, or department; this role routinely uses standard kitchen equipment; knives, ovens, hot cooking surfaces, mixers.
