Reporting to the Associate Director of Academic Services and Learning Resources and working collaboratively with professional colleagues, the ASLR Summer Intern will perform duties and gain experience in running a summer academic bridge and transition program.

Job Description

Major Areas of Responsibility

Duties Include

  • training, supervising, and developing 15 student staff
  • arranging room assignments, access, and move-in/out for approximately 45 student participants and 15 staff
  • coordinating and supervising student activities and weekend field trips
  • facilitating the transition of student participants to a separate orientation that begins at the conclusion of the summer bridge program.

During June and July, the Summer Intern will be oriented to our Jesuit and Catholic undergraduate liberal arts college. There will be on-the-job training in residence hall emergency protocols, community standards, academic support, and organizing a program orientation for families and students. In late July/August the Summer Intern will put these skills to the test by supervising student staff for the duration of the program.

Specific Learning Outcomes Include Being Able To

  • describe challenges faced by student participants in an academic transition program and explain how program components support the development of students (e.g., 1st-gen students, students from underrepresented populations, etc.)
  • identify, create and lead training sessions on topics critical for all student staff (e.g., residence and emergency protocols, community standards)
  • identify topics for training student academic staff (e.g., classroom management, responding to student questions)
  • secure presenters and help organize a multi-day training schedule
  • set goals for team building and the development of individual student staff and support the student staff in achieving their goal
  • field emergency calls and follow College protocols for communication and response
  • manage housing access and move-in/out in accordance with College policy.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required
  • experience in residence life on a college campus. e.g., residence advisor, residence hall supervisor ideally with 1st-gen and underrepresented student populations
  • experience training college student leaders
  • strong communication and interpersonal skills, excellent writing and clear presentations
  • proven ability to organize, solve problems, and complete projects with minimal supervision
  • commitment to teamwork
  • flexibility and dependability
  • familiarity with Microsoft Office and Google Workspace (Gmail, Google drive, Google sites).
  • Must be able to work weekends and evenings.

COMPENSATION: Total compensation will be at $10,000. This position includes housing.

HOUSING: Housing will be provided in an efficiency apartment (with kitchenette) in an on-campus residence hall that is separate from where the student participants will stay. The residence hall is equipped with air conditioning and has laundry facilities in the building. Free parking is available on campus.

MEALS: During June and July (until student program staff arrives for training) the Summer Intern will provide their own meals. Once the program starts (July 30) the Summer Intern will be required to eat with the staff and students. All meals during the summer transition program will be provided.
