Summary of Position:

The CSI Agriculture Department is seeking applicants for a full-time salaried 12-month Fish Hatchery Assistant Manager position at the CSI Fish Hatchery, located in the Snake River Canyon, approximately 1.5 miles upriver of the Blue Lakes Country Club in Jerome County. The CSI Fish Hatchery consists primarily of an 8,400 square foot indoor facility supported by its own spring. Operations include the propagation, breeding, and marketing of multiple fish species including trout, sturgeon, and burbot for the primary purpose of educating and training students pursuing careers in aquaculture, fisheries management, water resources management and other natural resources related fields. The successful applicant will provide consistent oversight of daily hatchery operations, supervise student workers, and report to and work closely with the CSI Aquaculture and Fisheries Management Program Manager. To ensure necessary fish care, some working on weekends, evenings, and holidays is inevitable in this position. These duties will be shared with the Aquaculture and Fisheries Program Manager, and other part-time or student labor when available.

Specific duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

 

  • Be responsible for ensuring all operational tasks at the fish hatchery such as (but not limited to) fish feeding and care, raceway cleaning, system maintenance, feed ordering, etc. are performed professionally, thoroughly, and in a timely manner. These tasks will be performed either directly by the Assistant Manager or through his/her direct supervision and oversight. 
  • Record and maintain all necessary and pertinent records for the facility including water flow and quality information, fish stock and feed inventories, feed usage and conversion information, fish mortality and disease occurrences and treatment, etc. 
  • Perform routine repairs and maintenance to the facility and communicate closely with the Aquaculture and Fisheries Program Manager and representatives of the CSI Maintenance Department regarding the need for and execution of larger facility repairs/upgrades.
  • Work independently with limited oversight and supervision, having the capacity to make operational decisions as needed, while recognizing the need to discuss and receive approval from appropriate supervisory/administrative personnel for items requiring significant budgetary requirements, or higher level/strategic decisions.
  • Maintain a schedule for coverage of fish hatchery duties including weekends, holidays, etc., and provide necessary training, support, and guidance for CSI students and part-time or work-study employees who will aid in performing hatchery tasks.
  • Assist the Program Manager as needed in the set-up, organization, and ordering necessary supplies for instructional and lab activities and assist with these activities as required.
  • Oversee loading, transport, and delivery of fish to 3rd party purchasers, including private pond-stocking customers.
  • Provide hatchery tours to classes, prospective students, and other groups as necessary.
  • Work closely with the CSI Aquaculture and Fisheries Program Manager and the CSI Ag. Department Chair in supporting the success of the CSI Aquaculture and Fisheries Program, the CSI Ag. Department, and contributing to the overall mission of the College of Southern Idaho

 

Minimum Qualifications:

 

  • Associates Degree in aquaculture, fisheries science, or related field, plus a minimum of 2 years of professional experience, OR a Bachelor’s degree in a related degree in lieu of experience.
  • Ability to perform physical labor, including lifting up to 50 lbs., standing for extended periods, and working outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Willingness to work early mornings, weekends, or on-call as needed for fish care.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license
  • Basic math and record-keeping skills
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and safety protocols
  • Must successfully pass a criminal background check as a condition of employment.
