The University of Iowa, College of Law, Labor Center is seeking a Labor educator. This position provides adult continuing education on labor and workplace issues for workers across the state and region through a wide range of non-credit classes, seminars, and conferences both on and off campus. Responsibilities include teaching, curriculum development, conference coordination, applied research for educational purposes, maintaining positive working relationships with labor organizations, and conducting grant-related activities. This position requires a J.D. degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience, and experience representing labor organizations.

Job Duties and Tasks: 

  • Teach non-credit labor education classes both on and off campus in relevant areas, including collective bargaining, contract administration and grievance handling/arbitration, labor communications, labor and employment law, labor history, leadership development and union administration, organizing and mobilizing, political economy, public policy issues, strategic planning, safety and health, and other workplace/union issues. 
  • Design, write and produce labor education materials including replicable curricula and instructional materials appropriate for adult learners.
  • Conduct applied research on labor topics for educational purposes.
  • Supervise graduate research assistants and undergraduate interns who may assist with applied research.
  • Plan, promote and administer non-credit labor education classes, seminars and conferences both on and off campus.
  • Develop and maintain close working relationships with local, state, regional and national labor organizations.
  • Coordinate conferences; coordinate with sponsors, guest instructors, and administrative staff to plan, promote, and administer educational conferences and institutes. 
  • Conduct grant and administrative activities; investigate and identity grant opportunities, write and submit grant applications, conduct, track, and report grant activities, participate in departmental decision-making processes and administrative functions.

Required Qualifications

  • JD degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required. 
  • Three years teaching labor law related topics to adult learners and producing high quality educational materials. 
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct applied research relevant to workers and their organizations.
  • Prior program coordination and administration experience.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working collectively with, and ability to relate to, workers and their organizations.
  • Valid drivers’ license and ability to meet and maintain UI Fleet Safety Standards
  • Willingness to travel and work weekends and evenings.

 

Desirable Qualifications

  • Direct experience in collective bargaining, labor/employment law, and/or worker/union representation.
  • Areas of expertise and teaching that complement and expand on those already possessed by current staff.
