Purpose of Job:

|
To provide counseling and guidance to students in the school(s) where employed.
|
|
Primary Job Duties/Responsibilities: The following duties are normal for this job. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned as needed.
|
|
General Responsibilities/Essential Functions:
- Responsible for implementing a school counseling program as determined by the Tennessee State School Counseling Model and Guidelines
- Provide preventive and developmental counseling to school students in order to prepare them for their school responsibilities and their social, emotional and physical development
- Aide children in academic development through the use and interpretation of test scores, improved pupil self-concept, and early identification and attention to problems that are deterrents to learning and development
- Act in a consultant role to teachers relative to the use of test scores and improvement of the learning environment, use of out-of-school resources and agencies, and act as a home-school liaison
- Offer services related to the identification and placement of children academically
- Serve in a consultant role to parents, in a liaison capacity, as a resource in understanding growth and development, and as an aid in understanding how some non-school factors affect learning and achievement
- Responsible for immediately reporting any reasonable suspicions related to a child’s health or welfare as a result of abuse or neglect to the appropriate state/community agency, as well as the principal
- Immediately report to school and district administration any student issue that may involve threats to self or others, including threats of school violence
- Abide by the Tennessee Teacher Code of Ethics
- Collaborate with behavior support team for teacher and student success
- Serve as a resource in decreasing discipline problems through an understanding of peer relations, teacher-pupil relations, social and emotional awareness
- Aid in improving school attendance and retention by implementing an early identification and prevention program for potential attendance and retention problems
- Serve as a resource in decreasing the incidence of juvenile delinquency by early intervention through guidance and school counseling services
- Act as a resource and consultant to teachers in implementing a career development program which, at the elementary school level, includes self awareness, job awareness and pre-vocational orientation
- Provide an available source for students who need someone to “just listen”
- Serve as a resource and consultant to teacher in implementing an intervention program that utilizes conflict resolution and decision-making strategies aimed at preventing occurrences of disruptive acts by students within the school, at school related activities/events, and on school property
- Ensure that the use of the district’s resources (time, money, people) are used in the most strategic and effective way possible
- Provide thirty days notice of resignation so that an appropriate replacement may be found

- Project a positive image of the LSSD at all times and support district goals
- Maintain a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of district information
- Support the effective delivery of a high quality of education for all students
- Provide exceptional levels of professional support and service to staff and public
- May operate a motor vehicle to conduct various work activities
- Successful completion of Criminal Justice fingerprint/background process and drug screen

- Master’s Degree
- Valid Tennessee teaching license with proper area of endorsement
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Principal or Director of Schools may find appropriate and acceptable

Physical demand requirements are at levels of those for active light work in a classroom setting.
