Colby-Sawyer College’s Department of Campus Safety's mission is to create a safe environment conducive to learning by promoting individual responsibility and community commitment through education, empowerment, engineering and enforcement using proactive partnerships throughout the Colby-Sawyer College community.
Campus Safety officers oversee the safety and wellbeing of people and property on the Colby-Sawyer College campus, serve as a campus resource on issues of safety and security, and assist in the handling of various emergency situations. Overnight work and other than normal work schedules can be expected in this position. Duties require regular public contact with a high degree of tact, judgment, and job knowledge.
Responsibilities
- Patrol campus buildings and grounds to prevent, report, intervene, or assist in the investigation of any incidents of theft, vandalism, fire or fire hazards, disorderly conduct, illegal alcohol or drug use, violation of college traffic, safety, security, or other regulations as directed in the Campus Safety General Orders. Includes ensuring that buildings are locked and unlocked as appropriate. May include the checking of ID's and/or parking authorization of visitors, and escorting of individuals off campus when appropriate.
- Coordinate with Student Development personnel on issues relating to students, student conduct, health, student life, etc.
- Serve as a campus resource on issues of personal safety, crime prevention, and emergency response procedures (i.e: evacuation drills, RAD training, orientation, etc.)
- Coordinate with facilities personnel on issues relating to the operation of buildings and grounds, and the safety of all students, faculty and staff.
- Respond to complaints/calls related to possible criminal activity, investigate incident and/or apprehend involved individuals as appropriate.
- Investigate traffic accidents and/or violations on campus.
- Respond to calls involving medical emergencies. Perform first aid/CPR and call for additional assistance as appropriate.
- Report any incidents and unusual or hazardous conditions on campus to appropriate College officials and/or local law enforcement personnel.
- Call for and assist local police, fire, and rescue personnel as appropriate. Follow established procedure while awaiting their arrival, including evacuating buildings, crowd control, assuring emergency equipment availability, etc.
- Provide safety escort services as needed to students.
- Assist students, faculty, staff, and visitors with problems with keys, locks, doors, cars, etc. Refer individuals to campus facilities or other departments where assistance can be obtained.
- Issue College vans to authorized personnel, as needed.
- Provide security services such as parking, traffic direction and crowd control for special events.
- Deliver directions and information to visitors and guests as needed.
- Complete all required reports on security activities, in accordance with current departmental policies and procedures.
- Report to campus during emergencies to include when the college is closed to assist with the campus response/recovery.
