Description:

The Physical Therapy Assistant (PTA) provides skilled therapy services under the direction and supervision of a licensed Physical Therapist (PT) to patients in their homes. The PTA helps patients restore function, improve mobility, relieve pain, and prevent or limit permanent physical disabilities caused by illness, injury, or aging. This role supports the patient’s plan of care, ensuring continuity of care and promoting independence in the home environment.

Under the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana and Patient Protection Act,?(“The Unity Bill”) this position is considered a “Safety-sensitive position. “Safety-sensitive” is defined to include “any job that includes tasks or duties that could affect the safety and health of the employee performing the task or others.” Employees working in “safety-sensitive” roles are subject to this exception and subject to disciplinary action in the event of a positive test for marijuana or its metabolites.

Requirements:

Licensure/Education: Current, active Physical Therapy Assistant license in the state of Oklahoma, in good standing.

  • Certification: Must maintain current BLS

Experience:

  • Minimum 1 year of home health experience (required).
  • Previous supervisory or coordinator experience strongly preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of home health regulations, compliance, and EMR systems.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to multitask, problem-solve, and work collaboratively across disciplines.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver physical therapy treatments and interventions as delegated by the supervising PT.
  • Follow established care plans to improve patient mobility, strength, endurance, and functional independence.
  • Instruct patients and caregivers on safe exercises, equipment use, and home exercise programs.
  • Observe and document patient progress, reporting changes in condition or performance to the supervising PT.
  • Assist in the implementation of therapeutic techniques including gait training, strengthening, balance, transfer training, and range of motion exercises.
  • Ensure therapy services comply with physician orders, agency policies, and regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team (nurses, occupational therapy, speech therapy, social work, etc.) to support patient-centered care.
  • Educate patients and families on safety and functional mobility strategies in the home.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of all patient encounters and interventions.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Ability to travel frequently to patient homes, facilities, and meetings as required.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, squat, and reach for extended periods.
  • Frequent lifting, transferring, and positioning of patients, including those weighing up to 50 pounds independently and up to 100 pounds with assistance.
  • Ability to push, pull, and maneuver medical equipment, wheelchairs, and therapy devices.
  • Fine motor skills to perform therapeutic interventions and operate medical/office equipment.
  • Adequate visual and auditory acuity to assess patient condition, provide treatment, and respond to emergencies.
  • Ability to drive for extended periods and tolerate variable weather and environmental conditions when traveling to patient homes.
  • Stamina to manage a flexible schedule that may include evenings and weekends, as patient needs dictate.
