Cognizant is seeking an Oracle and SQL Server DBA for a full-time opportunity in Charlotte, NC. Qualified applicants must be authorized to work in the US. Cognizant will not be able to offer visa sponsorship now or anytime in the future.
Responsibilities
SQL Server Administration & Operations
Start up and shut down SQL Server services as required
Create, configure, refresh, and provision SQL Server databases
Execute and maintain database objects (tables, indexes, schemas) supplied by application teams
Perform schema and database refreshes across environments
Manage database disk allocation, file growth, and storage usage
Maintain clustering and high‑availability configurations where applicable
Backup, Restore & Recovery
Execute And Monitor
Full database backups
Differential backups
Transaction log backups
Verify successful backups to disk and tape (where applicable)
Perform database restore and recovery operations during incidents and requests
Change recovery models as approved
Conduct backup validation and restoration drills
Support disaster recovery activities and replication / log shipping setups
Monitoring & Incident Management
Monitor SQL Server alerts, errors, and database health
Respond To Monitoring Alerts Related To

Handle Severity 1 To Severity 4 Incidents, Including
Sev‑1 / Sev‑2 incident resolution with RCA
Sev‑3 / Sev‑4 operational tickets
Participate in problem management and root cause analysis
Provide client call handling and ticket queue management via ITSM tools
Performance Management & Optimization
Monitor SQL Server–specific performance counters (CPU, memory, I/O, waits)
Identify And Resolve
Blocking and deadlocks
CPU and memory bottlenecks
TempDB and connectivity issues
Perform index maintenance, statistics collection, and database reorganizations
Recommend query and database performance improvements
Support application teams with SQL performance tuning recommendations
Capacity & Storage Management
Monitor database growth and space utilization
Configure And Manage
Autogrowth settings
TempDB usage
Data and log file allocation
Perform proactive space management and capacity optimization
Support data archiving, partitioning, and compression activities where in scope
Security & Access Management
Create and manage SQL Server logins, users, roles, and permissions
Grant and control access based on approved templates and change requests
Implement and validate database security policies and procedures
Support Transparent Data Encryption (TDE)–enabled databases post go‑live
Assist in security audits by providing required compliance data
High Availability & Resilience
Support SQL Server HA Technologies Including
Clustering
Log Shipping
Replication
Monitor HA/DR configurations and respond to failures
Support disaster recovery testing as per provided DR documentation
Change, Release & Governance Support
Execute database changes through approved change management processes
Support database patching and minor upgrades
Participate in change scheduling, approvals, and CAB activities
Maintain SOPs, operational guidelines, and support documentation
Contribute to knowledge base updates and transition activities
Qualifications
Microsoft SQL Server Administration (multiple versions)
Backup, restore, and recovery operations
SQL performance monitoring and tuning
HA/DR concepts (Clustering, Log Shipping, Replication)
T‑SQL execution and troubleshooting
Process & Behavioral Skills
ITIL‑aligned Incident, Problem, and Change Management
Strong troubleshooting and RCA capability
Experience supporting enterprise, regulated environments
Clear documentation and stakeholder communication
Knowledge of Oracle database refreshes(datapump and cloning), user creation, space management, Data Guard.
Hands-on knowledge with Oracle RAC, GoldenGate and oracle patching.
Knowledge of SQL\PLSQL, triggers, functions, procedures, packages and relational database tuning and overall performance management.
