 A qualified anesthesia nurse practitioner involved in the administration of anesthesia related services

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS

• Graduate of a nurse anesthesia educational program accredited by the Council of Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs or its predecessor

• Valid, current RN license in the state of Texas (required)

• Valid, current license as an Advanced Practice Nurse Anesthetist by the Texas State Board of Nursing (required)

• Complies with one of the following requirements regarding certification eligibility, initial certification, or recertification:

o Meets criteria 1, and 2 above, and is waiting initial certification, or

o Is currently certified by the Council of Certification of Nurse Anesthetist or its predecessor

o Is currently recertified by the Council of Certification of Nurse Anesthetist or its predecessors

CERTIFICATIONS

• BLS (unless ACLS certified)

• ACLS (required within 60 days of employment)

• PALS (required within 60 days of employment)

• NRP (required within 60 days of employment)

• Additional languages (preferred)

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Evaluates the patient pre-operatively by interviewing and examining the patient; assesses data and selects appropriate anesthetic.

• Works in collaboration with other CRNA, surgeons and other physicians and medical professionals to deliver anesthesia for medical and surgical procedures

• Cares for patient before, during and after a medical procedure or surgery by performing a patient assessment, prepares the patient for anesthesia, administers, and maintains anesthesia to ensure proper sedation and pain management, oversees patient recovery from anesthesia and cares for the patient’s immediate post-operative needs

• Administers anesthetics in accordance with clinical privileges; performs medical non-surgical procedures (i.e., IV insertion, intubation, induction of anesthesia, emergence of general anesthesia; placement of arterial and central venous access lines; administers various types of anesthetic blocks, maintains hemodynamic and electrolyte balance; administers epidurals and secures airways in routine and acute medical situations

• Works in the operating room and is able to perform general local mac and regional anesthesia for patients, including patients who are undergoing surgery

• Works in all areas of anesthesiology, from general surgery to the delivery room. Prepares patients, takes a medical history, explains procedures, administers anesthetics, monitors the patient during surgery and keeps a record of the course of anesthesia, within the scope of the CRNA’s credentials/privileges.  Responds to critical situations arising during treatment and works with a healthcare team to ensure patient safety.

• Prepares drugs, maintains accounting of controlled substances; evaluates anesthesia equipment to ensure safe operating conditions

• Assists in assurance that patient care requirements are met.

• Participates in the department QI functions.

• Performs other anesthesia-related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

• Advanced knowledge of physiology, pathophysiology, and pharmacology and the ability to apply this knowledge on a case-to-case basis

• Possess an attitude that fosters a respectful, non-threatening workplace environment

• Skill in providing effective anesthesia services, assessing patient situations and taking effective courses of action in a timely manner

• Knowledge of anesthesia principles, techniques and procedures for patient care and the ability to apply that knowledge to the clinical care of the patient

• Knowledge of the clinical environment and how the services and functions interact and the ability to apply that knowledge to the clinical care of the patient

• Adheres to the American Association of Nurse Anesthetist Standards of Practice and Texas State Board of Nursing

• Maintains a practice current with CDC, DNV and HIPAA standards regarding direct patient care

• Compassion in dealing with others.

• Professionalism and communication skills and the willingness to work as a team.

• Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.

• Aware of surgical fire risks and understands the role of the Surgical Services team in preventing and responding to surgical fires

• Position requires reaching, bending, stooping, and handling objects with hands and/or fingers, talking and/or hearing, and seeing

• Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
