Childcare Specialist
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS:
- Care for infants and children through organization of social, educational, and recreational activities.
- Prepare and assist with daily care of infants and children, including, but not limited to: children’s hygiene, mealtimes, sleeping, and play.
- Provide and/or coordinate room maintenance. Pick up and clean around room throughout the day. Maintain safe and clean environment by cleaning toys daily. Maintain and clean outside play yard, according to program needs.
- Consult with primary counselors assigned to patients about parenting behaviors of concern.
- Maintain clinical records (part of state records) including child development plans, progress notes, immunizations, custody, and observation notes in accordance with standard clinical procedures, according to program needs.
- Under supervision, provide parenting education and supportive feedback to parents.
- Prepare play materials and ensure that play areas, equipment, and toys are safe and sanitary.
- Under supervision, facilitate projects for parents, according to program needs.
- Maintain reference bulletin boards with patient information, according to program needs.
- Monitor and order supplies for play area as needed according to program budget.
- Respond to emergencies, coordinate safe response to children, implement crisis response practices.
- Interact with children, patients, and staff in a professional and respectful manner.

SECONDARY RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS:
- Provide coverage for other positions on a short-term basis as needed.
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Must have high school diploma or GED, with additional child- development related education or training.
- Prior experience in professional child care position is required. Candidates must demonstrate verifiable knowledge of child development issues.
COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS:
- Must be able to communicate clearly and have basic writing and interpersonal abilities.
- Ability to be attentive to and identify high risk situations, communicating with the appropriate channels in a timely manner.
- Ability to intervene in such a way that demonstrates sensitivity and respect while keeping a clear line of communication between supervisor and treatment team.
- Ability to demonstrate a non-judgmental and respectful attitude with patients at all times.
- Ability to assess patient needs and establish linkage between patients and resources in a coordinated, effective, and efficient manner.
- Demonstrate knowledge of accepted principles of client record management.
- Applicants must undergo a criminal background check and a pre-employment drug screen. Must not be on supervised parole or probation. If in recovery, must be at least two years clean and sober outside of a residential facility.
- Ability to maintain professional communications and boundaries while managing complex situations and interacting with individuals diagnosed with substance use or co-occurring conditions.
- Ability to utilize both oral and written communications skills to effectively communicate with patients, co-workers, community resources, supervisors, and various other individuals encountered in the course of performing work while maintaining patient confidentiality and establishing professional rapport.
- Thorough understanding of childhood developmental stages.
- Ability to identify and monitor age-appropriate behaviors and activities in children.
- Ability to operate a computer, utilize basic MS Office programs, and effectively navigate and maintain patient records in an electronic medical records system.
Qualifications
REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:
- Basic Life Support (BLS) (for adults/infants/children) certification or ability to acquire within 90 days of hire.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Must be able to occasionally lift up to 25 lbs.
- Must be able to perform Basic Life Support for 15 minutes continuously and maintain BLS certification.
- Must be able to follow infection control practices and safely work in patient-focused environment.
- Must be able to operate a personal computer, including reading from a computer monitor, keyboarding, and using a mouse.
- Must be able to negotiate staircase, reach, bend, and handle objects.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- Consistent attendance and punctuality are required of this position.
- Acceptable results on a DHS Childcare Registry Screening required when working in a residential program where children are routinely present.
- A negative result on all pre-employment, reasonable basis, and post-accident drug screens.
- An acceptable criminal record as determined by DHS, the Oregon Administrative Rules, and the Oregon Revised Statutes, and no current supervised parole or probation
Shift details Tuesday 12:30 to 4:30 and Friday 12:30 to 4:30.
