Nature of Work
Design, coordinate, and lead hands-on learning that integrates outdoor education with academic curriculum for middle and high school students. Promote student engagement, leadership, critical thinking, and environmental responsibility through activities such as hiking, camping, climbing, fishing, archery, and wilderness survival skills.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Develop and implement outdoor, experiential lessons that align with state standards and district learning goals.
- Provide engaging, safe, and educational outdoor experiences for students.
- Collaborate with classroom teachers to integrate outdoor learning into existing curricula, particularly in science, social studies, and physical education.
- Facilitate activities such as hiking, camping, climbing, fishing, archery, and wilderness survival skills.
- Develop and maintain risk management protocols, including safety briefings, emergency preparedness, and behavioral expectations for all off-site activities.
- Foster a safe, inclusive, and respectful learning environment where students can take risks, solve problems, and build resilience.
- Support students’ social-emotional growth through outdoor experiences that encourage collaboration, mindfulness, and personal responsibility.
- Supervise students during off-campus excursions and ensure safety protocols are followed at all times.
- Coordinate with local organizations and community leaders to enhance educational programming.
- Develop and maintain partnerships with environmental and cultural organizations to broaden outdoor experiences.
- Maintain outdoor education equipment, materials, and spaces.
- Document student learning through performance assessments, reflection, and/or portfolios.
- Maintain positive attitude and ensure classroom environment is conducive to student learning.
- Maintain professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district, and/or in self-selected professional growth activities.
- Exhibit professionalism by maintaining good attendance and adhering to established work schedule.
- Comply with the Code of Ethics, administrative directives, board policies, local, state and federal statues and rules and regulations.
- Complete annual mandatory Vector Training.
- Communicate and display courteous and professional behavior toward students, the public, the Immediate Supervisor, School and District Administrators, staff and peers.
- Safeguard the confidentiality of information pursuant to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and other applicable state and federal statutes.
- Evenings and weekend work may be required.
- Perform such other tasks as may be assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
1. Bachelor’s degree in Education or related field from a regionally accredited college or university.
2. Current New Mexico Public Education Department (NMPED) Secondary 7-12 Technical-Vocational License.
3. Current First Aid and CPR certification required.
4. Valid New Mexico driver’s license.
5. Ability to physically lead and participate in outdoor activities in diverse terrain and weather conditions.
6. Must be able to pass a criminal background check.
Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills
Knowledge: of experiential/outdoor learning pedagogy and outdoor education principles.
Skills: excellent classroom and behavior management skills in outdoor environments; developing hands-on, inquiry-based activities that foster critical thinking; strong organizational and time-management skills; excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills; technologically proficient for planning communication, and documentation.
Ability to: engage students of diverse backgrounds and learning styles; effective organizational skills; work independently and collaboratively with school and community stakeholders.
