Nature of Work
Responsible for the safe transportation of students, staff, and equipment to and from school-related activities, events, and field trips. This position ensures compliance with all safety regulations and district policies while maintaining a high standard of professionalism and student supervision.
Duties and Responsibilities
●Operate a school activity bus in a safe and responsible manner.
●Transport students, teachers, coaches, and equipment to and from school activities, field trips, and events.
●Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections to ensure the bus is in safe operating condition.
●Maintain accurate records, including trip logs, mileage, and inspection reports.
●Adhere to all traffic laws, school district policies, and transportation department guidelines.
●Ensure student safety by enforcing proper behavior and bus safety rules during transit.
●Communicate effectively with school staff, students, and parents regarding transportation schedules and concerns.
●Assist students in boarding and exiting the bus as necessary, including those with special needs.
●Perform basic maintenance checks and report any mechanical issues to the transportation department.
●Fuel and clean the bus regularly to maintain a safe and comfortable environment.
●Respond appropriately to emergencies and follow proper procedures in the event of an accident or breakdown.
●Comply with the Code of Ethics, administrative directives, board policies, local, state and federal statues and rules and regulations.
●Communicate and display courteous and professional behavior toward students, the public, the Immediate Supervisor, School and District Administrators, staff and peers.
●Safeguard the confidentiality of information pursuant to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and other applicable state and federal statutes.
●Complete mandatory annual vector training.
Minimum Qualifications
1.High school diploma or equivalent.
2.Valid New Mexico Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements.
3.Previous experience as a school bus or commercial driver preferred.
4.Ability to pass a criminal background check, drug screening, and medical examination as required by state and federal regulations.
Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills
Knowledge of: state and federal transportation regulations; basic mechanical knowledge to perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections.
Ability to: operate a school activity bus safely in various weather and traffic conditions; manage student behavior and enforce safety rules.
Skills: strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Work Environment
Work is primarily performed in a school bus and outdoor environments; exposure to varying weather condition and road hazards; must be able to sit for extended periods while driving.
