HOUSEKEEPER / ROOM ATTENDANT

Cobblestone Inn & Suites – Schuyler, Nebraska

Position Summary

The Housekeeper/Room Attendant is responsible for cleaning, sanitizing, and preparing guest rooms and assigned hotel areas to Cobblestone Inn & Suites standards.

Housekeepers play a major role in the guest experience. Every room must be clean, comfortable, properly stocked, and completely rent-ready before being released for a guest.

This position requires attention to detail, dependability, good time management, and the ability to work independently while also working as part of the housekeeping team.

Essential Duties & ResponsibilitiesGuest Room Cleaning

  • Clean and prepare checkout rooms for arriving guests.
  • Service all assigned stayover rooms.
  • Enter and properly service every room assigned for housekeeping.
  • Strip used bedding and replace linens according to hotel procedures.
  • Make beds neatly and according to hotel standards.
  • Clean and sanitize bathrooms, including toilets, tubs/showers, sinks, counters, mirrors, and floors.
  • Dust furniture, lamps, headboards, televisions, ledges, and other surfaces.
  • Check high and low areas for dust, hair, debris, and cobwebs.
  • Vacuum carpet and clean hard-surface flooring.
  • Empty trash and replace liners.
  • Clean mirrors, windows, and glass surfaces as assigned.
  • Restock towels, toiletries, coffee supplies, cups, and other guest amenities.
  • Check refrigerators, microwaves, coffee makers, televisions, remotes, clocks, lamps, and other room equipment.
  • Make sure furniture and room items are properly positioned.
  • Report stains, damage, maintenance concerns, missing items, or unusual conditions immediately.
  • Complete a final visual inspection before considering the room finished.

Stayover Rooms

Stayover rooms are an important part of daily housekeeping and must not be skipped.

Housekeepers are expected to:

  • Enter each assigned stayover room unless the guest has specifically declined service or management has provided other instructions.
  • Remove trash.
  • Replace used towels as needed.
  • Make or straighten the bed according to hotel procedures.
  • Restock guest supplies.
  • Clean and sanitize the bathroom as needed.
  • Vacuum or clean floors as necessary.
  • Straighten the room and address anything that needs attention.
  • Change bed linens according to the hotel's extended-stay schedule or when otherwise required.

Our standard is simple: we are in every assigned room, every day, unless the guest has declined service or management has instructed otherwise.

Checkout Rooms

Checkout rooms must be completely cleaned, sanitized, stocked, and inspected before being released as rent-ready.

Housekeepers are responsible for checking the entire room, not simply the most visible areas.

Special attention must be given to:

  • Bedding and mattress areas
  • Behind and underneath furniture when accessible
  • Bathroom corners and edges
  • Tub/shower areas
  • Baseboards
  • Window areas
  • Headboards
  • Lamps and light fixtures
  • Heating/air-conditioning units
  • Refrigerator and microwave
  • Drawers and closets
  • Doors, handles, switches, and other high-touch surfaces

A room should never be marked complete simply because it "looks okay" from the doorway.

Room-Time Expectations

Housekeepers are expected to work efficiently while maintaining quality.

General room-time goals are:

Stayover Room: Approximately 15 minutes
Checkout Room: Approximately 30–45 minutes

These are guidelines rather than permission to sacrifice cleanliness. If a room requires additional attention because of its condition, notify the Head Housekeeper or management.

Repeatedly exceeding normal room-cleaning times without a reasonable explanation may be addressed through coaching or additional training.

Laundry & Linen

Housekeepers may be required to assist with hotel laundry.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Washing, drying, folding, and properly storing hotel linens.
  • Removing stained or damaged linens from regular inventory.
  • Folding laundry promptly after drying.
  • Keeping the laundry area clean and organized.
  • Maintaining separation of clean and dirty linens.
  • Helping ensure sufficient linen is available for hotel operations.

Laundry is a shared hotel responsibility and should not be left unnecessarily for the next shift.

Room Inspection & Quality Standards

Every housekeeper is responsible for the quality of the rooms they clean.

Before leaving a room, the housekeeper should stop at the doorway and look back through the room as if they were the arriving guest.

Ask:

Would I be satisfied if I paid to stay in this room tonight?

If the answer is no, the room is not finished.

Rooms may be inspected by the Head Housekeeper or management. If corrections are needed, the housekeeper may be required to return to the room and correct them.

Lost & Found

  • Immediately report items left behind by guests.
  • Follow hotel Lost & Found procedures.
  • Never remove guest property from the hotel for personal use.
  • Do not discard items unless permitted under hotel policy.
  • Turn found property in to the designated location or manager.

Safety & Security

  • Keep housekeeping carts and supplies organized and safely positioned.
  • Follow proper procedures when handling chemicals and cleaning products.
  • Never leave guest-room keys or hotel access devices unattended.
  • Keep guest-room doors secured when rooms are unattended.
  • Report suspicious activity immediately.
  • Report safety hazards, leaks, damaged furniture, electrical concerns, pests, or maintenance problems immediately.
  • Follow hotel procedures for biohazards or heavily soiled linens rather than handling unsafe situations improperly.

Guest Service

Although housekeeping is primarily a cleaning position, housekeepers regularly interact with guests.

Housekeepers are expected to:

  • Greet guests pleasantly.
  • Be courteous and professional.
  • Assist with reasonable requests when possible.
  • Direct questions they cannot answer to the front desk.
  • Respect guest privacy.
  • Never discuss guest information, room numbers, or hotel business with unauthorized individuals.

Sold-Out & High-Occupancy Days

On sold-out or high-occupancy days, teamwork and efficiency are especially important.

The housekeeping team's responsibility is to ensure that 100% of rooms needed for arriving guests are clean and rent-ready.

Employees should not assume their workday is finished simply because their individual room list has been completed if additional rooms or essential housekeeping duties remain.

Management or the Head Housekeeper will determine when employees are released for the day.

Job Expectations

Housekeepers are expected to:

  • Arrive on time and ready to work.
  • Follow the assigned room list and daily instructions.
  • Maintain consistent cleaning quality.
  • Work efficiently without sacrificing cleanliness.
  • Complete required checklists.
  • Communicate problems instead of ignoring them.
  • Accept room inspections and correct deficiencies when necessary.
  • Properly care for hotel equipment and supplies.
  • Minimize unnecessary waste of linens, chemicals, amenities, and supplies.
  • Maintain a professional attitude with guests and coworkers.
  • Help other housekeeping team members when needed.
  • Follow instructions from the Head Housekeeper and management.

Qualifications

  • Dependable and punctual.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to follow cleaning procedures and checklists.
  • Good time-management skills.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Previous hotel or professional cleaning experience is helpful but not required.
  • Willingness to learn Cobblestone Inn & Suites cleaning standards.

Physical Requirements

This is a physically active position.

Employees must be able to:

  • Stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Bend, kneel, reach, push, pull, and twist repeatedly.
  • Push and maneuver housekeeping carts.
  • Lift and carry linens, supplies, and normal housekeeping equipment.
  • Make beds and perform repetitive cleaning motions.
  • Move between guest rooms and hotel floors throughout the shift.
  • Safely perform the physical duties associated with cleaning hotel guest rooms.

Our Housekeeping Standard

Our guests should never have to find what housekeeping missed.

Clean means clean — not "good enough."

Every guest deserves a room that is clean, sanitized, properly stocked, comfortable, and ready when they open the door.

Housekeeping is one of the most important departments in our hotel. The cleanliness of our rooms directly affects guest satisfaction, reviews, repeat business, and the reputation of our entire property.
