What are the responsibilities and job description for the Part-Time Volunteer Services Assistant position at Cobb County Government?
The Volunteer Services Assistant supports volunteer programs serving older adults and oversees the BEST (Broadening and Enriching Seniors Together) Senior-to-Senior Education Program. This program trains volunteers to deliver presentations that help seniors stay independent, connected, and healthy.
The Volunteer Services Assistant will be responsible for overseeing day to day activities of the department's Senior to Senior education program utilizing specially trained volunteers who make presentations on important and relevant topics facing our seniors today. Tools provided through these presentations empower older adults to remain independent and maintain a healthy lifestyle. This position will assist in developing new curriculum on topics that are relevant to the 55 population such as Digital Literacy, Combating Loneliness and Isolation etc. This position will be in charge of marketing Senior to Senior programs, volunteer recruitment and retention, onboarding and training, coordination of presentations in the community and at the various senior centers, program reporting, and volunteer recognition events. Additionally, this person will support the Volunteer Services Manager with Meals on Wheels deliveries (if needed), special events and other volunteer coordination as assigned.
Key Responsibilities

Assists in the planning and designing of programming, services, activities and/or events for assigned department: researches and develops, and assists in researching and developing, content for programming; assists in community needs assessments; gathers and reserves supplies/equipment as needed; creates handouts and informational supplements; and schedules programming.
Assists the implementation of, and implements, programming, services, activities and/or events for assigned department: conducts assigned classes for participants of different fitness/cognitive levels: recruits participants for new and existing classes; researches activities desired and requested by participants; gathers supplies and equipment; and provides skill demonstrations as needed.
Provides customer service to clients and the public: receives and responds to questions and requests for information; provides assistance and information related to center programs, services, materials, or other issues in assigned area; researches problems and initiates problem resolution; and enrolls clients for programs, services and materials.
Coordinates various programming and presentations for assigned area: communicates with community, groups, interested citizens, clubs, civic organizations, schools and related groups interested in education and development in assigned area; schedules speakers and presentations; and schedules activities and demonstrations.
Plans, leads, and supervises participants at various events: coordinates monthly recreational/social activities; arranges and organizes physical space and/or transportation; contacts various venues to schedule activities; and recruits participants.
Assists in the planning and implementation of public relations and communication for assigned department: creates and distributes flyers, schedules, calendars, brochures, emails and other promotional materials; maintains and updates email/mailing distribution lists; and attends public events/meetings.
Provides clerical support, as needed: completes, prepares and submits reports and forms on activities; updates weekly and monthly calendar; transcribes meeting minutes; utilizes petty cash fund; and maintains inventory of publications and other information for distribution.
Required to participate in various meetings and activities; and provides information and input regarding program activities, services, and needs.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED required; supplemented by two years of experience providing programs.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with volunteers, seniors, or community programs preferred
- Strong organization and communication skills
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and work independently
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License.Tasks require the ability to exert heavy physical effort in heavy work, with greater emphasis on climbing and balancing, but typically also involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds); may occasionally involve heavier objects and materials (up to 100 pounds).
Sensory Requirements
Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
Environmental Factors
Essential functions are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
