Position Information

The purpose of this classification is to oversee all programmatic operations of the Juvenile Court Probation Division, in furtherance of the duties performed in the role of Chief Probation Officer.

This position requires working a flexible schedule, i.e., some evenings, some weekends, and/or via a rotating on-call schedule that requires phone accessibility.

Essential Functions

Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff: develops and oversees employee work schedules to ensure adequate coverage and control; compiles and reviews timesheets; processes employee concerns and problems and counsels or disciplines as appropriate; assists with or completes employee performance appraisals; directs work; acts as a liaison between employees and management; and trains staff in operations, policies, and procedures.

Organizes, prioritizes, and assigns work: prioritizes and schedules work activities in order to meet objectives; ensures that subordinates have the proper resources needed to complete the assigned work; monitors status of work in progress and inspects completed work; consults with assigned staff to assist with complex/problem situations and provide technical expertise; provides progress and activity reports to management; and assists with the revision of procedure manuals as appropriate.

Ensures unit compliance with assigned program objectives in accordance with federal, state, and local regulatory standards, ordinances, laws, and requirements: participates in planning, organizing, coordinating, directing and evaluating assigned program to ensure optimum efficiency and effectiveness; and develops and maintains program policies, goals, objectives, procedures, strategies and mission statement for use in the program brochures and grants.

Researches evidence-based practices for alternative prosecution programs: performs library, periodical, and web-based searches on programs, practices, and procedures; and makes recommendations for implementation of new programs and changes to current programs to ensure optimum efficiency and effectiveness.

Serves as liaison between court staff, law enforcement agencies, attorneys, and the public to ensure efficiency of program: conducts or participates in regular program evaluations; coordinates between support staff and program participants to comply with court ordered sanctions; maintains active communication with support staff regarding participant compliance.

Monitors caseloads of offenders; reviews offender information and case notes; reviews attendance records for classes; reviews monthly progress notes; addresses inconsistencies between program requirements and actual participation; and determines situations for program termination.

Informs attorneys, defendants, and general public on program requirements; receives and responds to questions and inquiries regarding program information and program requirements; and creates presentations on program requirements.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice, Criminal Administration or related field; supplemented by five years of criminal justice experience, to include lead or supervisory experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.

Licenses and Certifications

Require a valid Driver's License

Physical Abilities

Tasks require the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (5-10 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or work station.

Sensory Requirements

Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

Environmental Factors

Essential functions are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
