GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Distinguishing Characteristics:
Career Specialists perform a comprehensive scope of responsibilities involving providing information on various educational, academic, and career technical resources and activities as well as assisting students in determining and advancing towards their short and long-term academic and professional goals and objectives. Some positions within this class are distinguished by the level and scope of responsibilities provided at Coastline ROP’s designated school sites. Incumbents assigned to partner schools provide additional college guidance and planning services, assistance with completing college applications, eligibility for academic scholarships, financial aid, and college and university entrance examinations.
Duties and Responsibilities:
· Provide career guidance, assessment, and development services to students; provide career and technical education advice to students; ensure student understanding of post-secondary education options and processes; disseminate various information concerning ROP courses, services, and activities.
· Recruit students and register students for classes and other ROP services; schedule and administer assessment inventories; assess student needs, interests, and abilities to determine appropriate academic and career goals and appropriate course or subject of study placement; assist students in establishing and pursuing goals, selecting and preparing for ROP courses, and completing various employment and higher educational packets and enrollment applications.
· Promote ROP services to students and the community; recruit and register students for classes and other ROP services; process student adds and drops; collect fees as necessary; monitor, assess, and follow up on student enrollment and progress; assist with resolving student issues.
· Support and maintain daily operations of the school site career center as required; organize and make available a comprehensive array of scholarship program informational materials, applications, and online resources; may solicit information and/or materials from college and other organizations, including college, trade/technical school, college videos for enhancing the Career Center reference collection and providing an additional resource for students and parents.
· Serve as a liaison between ROP and local school districts to enhance student and teacher knowledge of ROP career services and activities; visit school sites and community locations; prepare and deliver presentations promoting ROP career services, activities, policies, and procedures.
· Greet and assist students and other visitors to the career center; orient students, staff, and others individually or in groups in the use and content of career center resources and materials; operate and instruct others in the use of career center computer systems; assist students with career and college research.
· Schedule university and college site visits, college fairs, financial aid workshops, college application workshops, and scholarship presentations; assist with and guide students to community college placement tests; ensure parents, students and staff receive notification about upcoming events and presentations; promote scholarship, college and career opportunities for assisting students in their transition to post-high school options.
· Assist individual students with developing career and technical education and job searching skills and utilizing local resources, including appropriate websites; assist students in securing transportation to and from work; assist students with enhancing resumes, cover letters, and interview skills.
· Serve as a technical resource to students concerning State and federal labor laws, work permits, job placement, employment services, educational opportunities, and other matters related to ROP; assist students with securing financial assistance as appropriate.
· Process various forms and applications required for program enrollment and placement, including work permits; prepare and maintain various records and reports related to student information and assigned activities; establish and maintain filing systems; maintain a monthly log of activities.
· Operate various office equipment, including a copier, fax machine, overhead projector, computer, and assigned software; drive a vehicle to conduct work; maintain a master calendar of Career Center activities.
· Communicate with program personnel and various outside organizations to exchange information, coordinate activities, and resolve issues or concerns.
· Prepare various support materials, including newsletters, classification descriptions, fliers, and job announcements to enhance student employment and educational opportunities.
· Organize and conduct career and technical education fairs, seminars, and workshops; prepare related instructional and training materials.
· Attend a variety of assigned meetings, conferences, and in-services.
QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES
Knowledge of:
· Policies, regulations, and procedures applicable to marketing and recruitment of students.
· Recent career opportunities and trends in the marketplace.
· Strategies for publicizing and recruitment of students for ROP programs.
· Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and mathematics.
· Methods of effective cooperation with students, staff, other adults, and the public.
· Significant technology in area of assignment.
· Online/Zoom presentations for small groups

· Current school learning management platforms
· Current computer software applications: methods, practices, and terminology used in bookkeeping, record keeping, office practices, and procedures.

Ability to:
· Provide college and career technical assistance and information to students concerning ROP instructional programs, course offerings, and career and education options and processes.
· Provide college planning, advisement, and guide students in completing college applications, preparing for college entrance exams, and completing financial aid eligibility requirements.
· Assess student needs, interests, and abilities to determine appropriate career and education goals.
· Assist students in establishing and pursuing goals and selecting and preparing for ROP courses.
· Communicate and present through digital platforms.
· Serve as a liaison regarding ROP services, opportunities, and placement.
· Learn policies and objectives of assigned programs and activities.
· Learn, interpret, apply, and explain laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
· Promote ROP services, recruit students, and register students for classes and other activities.
· Participate in a variety of student recruitment and enrollment activities.
· Serve as a liaison between ROP and local school districts to enhance student and teacher knowledge of ROP career services and activities.
· Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
· Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
· Assist individual students with developing career and technical education and job searching skills.
· Prepare and deliver oral presentations digitally and in person.
· Process a variety of forms and applications.
· Determine appropriate action within clearly defined guidelines.
· Work independently with minimal direction.
· Operate standard office equipment, including a computer and assigned software.
· Maintain records and prepare required ROP and school – Career Center reports.
· Plan and organize work.
Education and Experience:
Required: Graduation from high school or equivalent; two (2) years of college is desired.
Experience: Career guidance or experience working in the public environment and/or working in a closely related field is desirable.
Other Requirements:
Licenses: Valid Class C California Driver’s License.
