What are the responsibilities and job description for the Cat Cafe Barista and Host position at Coaster Cats Cat Cafe?
Love rollercoasters? Great!
Love cats? Even better!
Love people, providing ridiculously good customer service, staying busy, and making someone's day a little better? PERFECT — because that's actually the job.
Coaster Cats Cat Cafe (aka "The Carlisle Cat Cafe") is looking for outgoing, reliable, flexible humans to join our team. We're a small, slightly quirky cat café where people come to drink coffee, shop our weird little trinkets, attend events, celebrate birthdays, bring their kids, and — obviously — hang out with some really great cats, that are all adoptable of course!
We're looking for people who can help make the entire experience memorable.
First things first: This is a PART-TIME job.
Hours vary based on business needs, events, seasonality, and staffing. This is a great fit for someone looking for flexible part-time work, but it is not a position with guaranteed full-time hours or an identical schedule every week.
So... Do I Get Paid to Play With Cats?
We hate to crush your dreams this early in the job listing, but no. There's also no rollercoasters. (I know. We are the worst. Ugh!)
With that said, our rescue partners and volunteers handle the primary care of our cats. You'll obviously spend your shifts surrounded by them (tough life, we know), but your job is focused on the humans.
Think hospitality, customer service, drinks, food, retail, events, cleaning, and keeping everything running smoothly.
You should absolutely love cats. You should probably love people just as much.
What You'll Actually Be Doing
- Greet guests and check them in for their reservations
- Make people feel genuinely welcome.
- Prepare coffee, tea, specialty drinks, and simple food items
- Ring up merchandise and café purchases
- Answer approximately 847 questions about the cats
- Interact with kids, families, couples, groups, regulars, and first-time visitors
- Talk with guests about our rescue partners, events, memberships, and merchandise
- Keep the café clean, stocked, organized, and looking great
- Handle opening or closing responsibilities
- Help with birthday parties, special events, and occasional evening events
- Find something productive to do when it's slow without needing someone to hand you a task (and yes, this sometimes means playing with the cats!)
- Jump between responsibilities when we're busy because small-business life is never boring
Basically: if you're the kind of person who sees something that needs to be done and just... does it, we will probably get along very well.
You Might Be Our Person If...
You're:
- Genuinely friendly and outgoing
- Comfortable starting conversations with strangers
- Great with kids and families
- Dependable and punctual
- Flexible with your availability
- Comfortable working both independently and with a small team
- Able to multitask without completely losing the plot
- Comfortable handling cash and learning a point-of-sale system
- Willing to clean — yes, everyone cleans... even the owners!
- Able to stay productive when things are quiet
- Comfortable with occasional changes and the realities of working for a small business
- Able to stand for extended periods and lift up to 20 lbs (roughly one very fat cat).
- Comfortable being surrounded by cats
You do not need to be a coffee expert. We can teach you how to make the drinks.
We can't really teach you to enjoy talking to people.
Let's Talk Scheduling
Our normal operating hours generally fall between 10 AM and 7 PM, depending on the day and location.
We're typically closed Mondays and Tuesdays, but sometimes we like to ruin that perfectly good predictability by scheduling special events, private parties, meetings, or additional hours.
We also occasionally hold evening events that run later than our normal café hours.
We're looking for people with flexible availability who can work a variety of weekday and weekend shifts. Applicants with broader availability will generally be a better fit for what we need.
And because we really want to be transparent: This is a part-time position and at times can be, very part time. Weekly hours may vary, and a specific number of hours is not guaranteed.
If you need a guaranteed 30–40 hours every week, this probably isn't the right position for you — and we'd rather tell you that now than after you've started. I'm sorry bestie, clear communication now will save us both some heartache.
Our Culture Matters
We're a small team, which means how we treat each other matters.
Coaster Cats is a welcoming and diverse workplace made up of people with different backgrounds, identities, personalities, experiences, and walks of life.
We value kindness, open communication, accountability, teamwork, and respect.
You don't have to have everything in common with the people you work with. That would be incredibly boring.
You do need to be comfortable working alongside people who may be different from you and treating your coworkers and our guests with respect.
Discrimination, harassment, bullying, or disrespect toward coworkers or guests has no place here.
We want people to be themselves, communicate when something isn't working, own their mistakes, help each other out, and contribute to a workplace where people actually enjoy showing up.
Experience Is Great. Personality Matters Too.
Previous experience in customer service, retail, cafés, restaurants, hospitality, barista work, or working with children is definitely helpful.
Former cat café employees? We'd especially love to hear from you.
But we're also happy to train the right person.
If you're reliable, outgoing, willing to learn, and genuinely care about giving people a great experience, don't count yourself out just because you've never made a latte before.
