Description
Title: Licensed Mate
Type: Daily Vessel Crew – Daily Pay DOE
Reports to: Port Captain (Vessel Captain at Sea)
Job Summary
Deckhands load cargo on and off our cargo vessels, act as lookout, and perform maintenance work such as painting and splicing rope. Deckhands may also act as Wipers who perform duties in the engine room when the vessel is traveling but will work cargo as when in Port. Each workday is at least 12 hours long and often much longer.
Essential Job Function/Duties
Work is performed aboard seagoing vessels making trips between Seattle, WA, Western Alaska, and the Aleutian Islands. Voyages average 24 days long. Crew members perform duties both in the ship’s house, on deck, and in the ship’s holds, where they may be exposed to extreme temperatures and weather conditions.
Crew members are assigned to their own cabin for the duration of the voyage. There is a ship’s cook aboard and access to limited wifi.

- Officer of the Watch - supervise watch in the wheelhouse which includes navigational duties
- Oversee and perform cargo operations
- Oversee and perform vessel maintenance
- Completes routine and scheduled maintenance aboard the vessel
- Maintains vessel cleanliness
- Oversee and perform repairing and splicing lines, and other shipboard equipment
- Perform cargo operations, which consist of strenuous physical work in an extreme environment.
- Duties include:
- Driving yard and stay cargo gear
- Operating lift trucks
- Slinging cargo loads
- Working with lashing chain, chain binders, and dunnage
- Sweeping and cleaning cargo holds

Qualifications
Qualifications:
- 1600 Ton Mate License from the U.S. Coast Guard is required.
- Forklift experience or the willingness to learn
- Ability to work at sea for approximately 24-day trips
- Ability to adapt to watch shifts for both underway and cargo operations
- Ability to work at a fast-paced, physical job
- A desire to learn best practices and methods of cargo operations
- Ability to take instruction
- Basics of Outlook, Word, and Excel
