What are the responsibilities and job description for the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner PMHNP APRN position at Coastal Connecticut Counseling LLC?
PMHNP Clinical Education & Preceptor Lead
Starting at $125/hour | Path to Part-Time Salaried Position
Teach. Mentor. Practice. Build.
Coastal Connecticut Counseling is looking for an experienced Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) who loves being an PMHNP, but also gets excited about helping the next generation of psychiatric providers become great clinicians.
This is a unique opportunity to combine psychiatric practice, teaching, mentorship, university partnerships, and program development while helping us grow Coastal's PMHNP training program.
We're looking for someone who is calm, patient, clinically confident, and genuinely enjoys helping others learn.
Must have training and clinical experience providing psychiatric care and prescribing across the lifespan, including children, adolescents, and adults. PMHNPs already credentialed with major Connecticut insurance plans are strongly preferred.
How the Position Will Grow
The position will initially begin on an hourly basis starting at $125/hour while we establish student placements, university partnerships, and your Coastal client caseload.
As PMHNP interns and your clinical caseload become established, the position is expected to transition into a part-time salaried role (range $115,000-$140,000) annually.
The established position is anticipated to include approximately:
- Minimum of 10 billable client hours per week
- Precepting up to 4 PMHNP interns at a time
- Dedicated time for supervision, teaching, documentation, university requirements, collaboration, and program development
- Approximately 25 hours per week overall, with some fluctuation based on student and program needs
What You'll Help Us Build
You'll take an active role in developing Coastal into a trusted clinical training site for future PMHNPs.
You'll:
- Precept and mentor up to 4 PMHNP students/interns
- Provide patient, thoughtful clinical teaching, supervision, and feedback
- Help students develop skills in psychiatric assessment, diagnosis, psychopharmacology, treatment planning, documentation, and clinical decision-making
- Review clinical work and complete required student evaluations and documentation
- Communicate regularly with university faculty and clinical-placement teams
- Develop and maintain relationships with PMHNP graduate programs
- Confidently speak with schools about Coastal's psychiatric program and clinical training opportunities
- Coordinate school requirements, placement expectations, evaluations, and required paperwork
- Help develop student onboarding, learning expectations, clinical competencies, and educational resources
- Identify opportunities to improve and expand the PMHNP training experience
- Help create a pipeline of talented future psychiatric providers
- Collaborate with Coastal leadership on the continued growth of our psychiatric program
You'll also maintain a small outpatient psychiatric caseload so that you remain actively engaged in clinical practice while teaching and mentoring future providers.
You'll Love This Role If You...
- Love teaching and mentoring
- Are calm and patient when someone is learning
- Enjoy watching others gain confidence and develop their clinical skills
- Are an experienced clinician who is confident in your own clinical judgment
- Love learning and continuing to grow professionally yourself
- Enjoy building relationships and connecting with people
- Are comfortable speaking with universities, faculty, and community partners about a program you believe in
- Are organized and excellent with follow-through
- Enjoy creating systems and helping programs develop
- Care about increasing access to quality psychiatric care in the community
- Are excited about helping Coastal grow its psychiatric services
- Want your experience to have an impact beyond your own individual caseload
What We're Looking For
- Board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC)
- Active Connecticut APRN license and appropriate prescribing credentials
- Strong post-graduate psychiatric clinical experience
- Excellent psychiatric assessment, diagnostic, and psychopharmacology skills
- Teaching, precepting, supervision, or mentorship experience strongly preferred
- Strong communication and relationship-building skills
- Excellent organization, reliability, and follow-through
- Commitment to evidence-based, compassionate psychiatric care
Why Coastal?
Coastal Connecticut Counseling is a clinician-owned outpatient mental health practice serving Connecticut through our Fairfield and Milford offices and telehealth.
For more than 10 years, we've worked to increase access to high-quality mental health care in our communities.
Now we're looking for someone who wants to help us take the next step: developing future psychiatric providers while continuing to grow accessible psychiatric care at Coastal.
This is an opportunity to use your experience in a different way—to care for your own clients, mentor future PMHNPs, build relationships with universities, and have a meaningful voice in the future of our psychiatric program.
If you're an experienced PMHNP who finds as much meaning in helping other clinicians grow as you do in providing excellent care yourself, we'd love to meet you.
