Part-Time Operations Contractor | Coalition Theater in Richmond, VA

Start Date: August 15, 2026 or earlier (flexible start)

Location: 8 W Broad St, Richmond, VA 23220

Position Summary:

This is an in-person, part-time (15-20 hours/week, day and evening hours), six-month contract with option for renewal.The operations contractor is responsible for:

  • Theater space management and maintenance
  • Front of house management: ticketing and concessions
  • Training and staffing of house managers and interns
  • Championing guest experience and care

This role reports to the Coalition Board Executive Committee with a monthly fixed fee of $1,300–$1,600 based on experience. A structured onboarding and training period will be provided. The Coalition is open to this contract being filled by two people.

Detailed Responsibilities:House Management and Intern Supervision

  • Promote and maintain a positive service culture with house managers and interns
  • Supervise House Manager staff, including:
  • scheduling, training, documentation, and payroll tracking
  • Work at least one House Manager shift per month
  • Supervise Intern Program, including:
  • reviewing and selecting interns from submitted applications or other referrals, training, handling infractions, creating monthly schedules
  • Weekly Tasks:
  • Create bar menu, set pricing in conjunction with the Finance committee/board, re-stock bar, including concessions, bottled and draft beer, wine and soft drinks
  • Update box office and bar point of sale (POS) software (Square/Eventbrite) to accurately reflect offerings
  • Routinely inventory bar and concession supply stock and conduct supply runs as needed
  • Place alcohol orders with vendors and receive deliveries
  • Work with Treasurer to ensure theater has appropriate cash on hand
  • Coordinate needs for set up of shows with artistic directors and outside acts
  • Seasonal support for 2nd Best Fest Operations (approx February–June)

Space Maintenance

  • Supervise theater cleaning and maintenance, spot-clean as necessary, and coordinate monthly professional cleaning service
  • Lead theater-wide volunteer maintenance efforts, e.g. periodic clean-up days.
  • Create and monitor a regular nightly and weekly cleaning schedule (mopping, sweeping, trash disposal, tidying) for the theater, green room, and basement, and work with House Managers and interns to implement it
  • Monitor cleaning and maintenance supply inventory (e.g. paper towels, cleaning liquids, trash bags, replacement bulbs for theater lighting, etc.) and re-purchase as necessary
  • Maintain a tidy, functional and appealing front of house for positive guest experience
  • Work with the landlord/building manager to report maintenance issues, request repairs, etc.
  • Participation in the Space Improvement Committee:
  • Assist with initiatives to improve the space (e.g. Front-of-house merchandise setup and display, front window, ticket counter display case, donation box)
  • Consult on the ongoing improvement of theater space– painting, minor repairs, grant-funded projects, etc.
  • Monitor the quality of internet service and manage access for employees, performers, and guests

Space Management

  • Manage Coalition’s online (Google) calendars to coordinate use of space schedule for classes, house team rehearsals, and special events with Education Director, Head Coaches and External Programming
  • Manage and schedule space rentals for out-of-town acts, workshops, fundraisers, and other special events. Coordinate with the Finance Director on payment processing
  • Field requests in a timely manner for student and company member use of the space for rehearsals
  • Monitor key access, using e.g. the MasterLock app to track key usage, teacher access codes, and temporary access to the theater
  • Work with leadership to develop, maintain and implement policies and protocols for performers, students, and volunteers as relates to use, security and accessibility of the space

  • Field space and operations questions and messages sent through rvacomedy.com, info@ email, and voicemail
  • Field requests for space rental, corporate workshops & training. Partner with relevant theater program managers where needed (i.e. education, ADs, & external programs)

Qualifications

  • Experience in event coordination, restaurant, bar, or theater house management strongly preferred
  • Custodial/Maintenance/Property management experience a plus
  • Have a vehicle for supply trips etc.
  • Must be physically able to stand for moderate periods of time, lift up to 40 pounds (e.g. Kegs and beverage cases), and perform basic cleaning tasks
  • Strong customer service and people management orientation; “friendly but firm” attitude
  • Proficiency or facility with Ticketing and Point of Sale platforms (e.g. Eventbrite, Square)

  • Should know or be willing to learn Coalition tech– light and sound, monitors, etc.
  • Must be available during daytime hours once a week to receive deliveries
  • Ideal candidate will be self-led and set their own schedule while being proactive about getting support when needed

Pay: $1,300.00 - $1,600.00 per month
