Professional OpporTunity in Arts & Literacy Youth Development:
The Arts & Literacy Youth Development Program is an innovative and comprehensive afterschool and summer program addressing Brooklyn and Queens youth’s needs, ages 5 – 14, in the areas of education, creative arts, youth leadership, and health. Program activities build leadership and literacy in the widest sense of the word through creative writing, the visual arts, drama, photography, video, music, yoga, creative movement/dance, and apprenticeships for high school students. The program engages the children’s entire family through monthly family literacy workshops, parent organizing, and comprehensive services available through the agency’s other programs.
POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The Teaching Artist is a focal point position in the Arts & Literacy Youth Development Department and a center point in the delivery of a quality arts and literacy education program. Whether building dynamic lesson plans to engage students, role modeling social emotional skills, supporting students in student-led project-based activities, or collaborating as part of a program team, Teaching Artists are key to ensuring that the work being done with the students is of the highest quality.
Teaching Artists are excited to be part of a creative team and are versatile, flexible, and open to frequent feedback on their classroom management, lesson plans, skills as an educator and employee. The ideal candidate possesses excellent classroom management skills; strong, sensitive, and professional communication skills, and an excellent sense of personal and professional boundaries.
Teaching Artist candidates must have a bachelor’s degree, master’s preferred, in a related field (arts education, education, youth development) and have at least 3 years of experience educating youth through a culturally sensitive lens while collaborating with diverse populations and a multitude of cultures.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Teach assigned content area.
2. Collaborate in designing literacy-based art curricula that align with recognized learning standards.
3. Collaborate in the implementation of STEM activities in the literacy-based arts curricula.
4. Always supervise and ensure the safety and welfare of students, including during field trips or activities outside of program site.
5. Keep students engaged and create a classroom culture of respect and participation.
6. Maintain accurate attendance for assigned students.
7. Communicate with parents regarding student’s progress in the program.
8. Make referrals to Art Therapist, as needed.
9. Supervise interns/assistants placed within the classroom.
10. Participate in events to recruit and retain program participants.
11. Regularly check emails and respond in a timely manner, at least within 24 hours.
12. Participate in agency wide events.
- Participate in all mandatory assigned trainings.
- Any other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. BA/BFA in professional content area, masters preferred.
2. 3 years’ experience as a teaching artist required.
3. Ability to create lesson plans and document curriculum.
4. Excellent organizational and time management skills.
5. Working knowledge of NYC Arts Cultural Community.
6. Experience working with diverse youth populations.
7. Occasional flexible schedule is required- some weekends and evenings.
8. Bilingual-Spanish/Mandarin/French is preferred.
Hiring Bonus: There are three components to the hiring bonus:
- $500 within the first month of employment if all required paperwork and clearances are submitted and the employee starts work within 30 days of the offer of employment.
- $500 upon successful completion of a six-month probationary period a work performance evaluation of meets or exceeds requirements.
Benefits:
- If works less than 21 hours no benefits or time off. NYC sick time is one hour earned per 30 hours worked. If works 21 to 34 hours, Ample paid vacation, holidays and sick days are offered. they are pro-rated based on hours worked. If works 35 to 40 hours, Earns 20 vacation, 12 sick and 12 holidays per year. (Use what is applicable to the position)
