About Coalition for Hispanic Family Services (CHFS):

CHFS is a community- based, family-focused organization of color providing an array of services to children and families in North Brooklyn and Western Queens. For over 33 years CHFS has worked with vulnerable populations that include children in foster care, seriously emotionally disturbed children and youth and families at risk of abuse and neglect. Our strength-based model also supports progressive youth development programs, family support services and community school partnerships. The provision of accessible, high-quality family focused services to families of color is central to our holistic approach of strengthening families in a culturally competent manner. Position Objective

The primary objective of the Counselor’s position is to help children who have experienced trauma develop coping skills designed to help them manage daily life stressors, ultimately supporting their transition back home. Counselors provide rehabilitative treatment services for children and youth (ages 8-12) in a 24-hour care setting that is consistent with the vision, mission and core values established by Coalition for Hispanic Family Services. The Counselor is a key member of a team that delivers culturally competent, strength-based, integrated services throughout the child’s intake to discharge process.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Provide personalized care and supervision to each resident, ensuring individual needs are met.
• Model and promote positive behaviors while upholding the program's core values.
• Utilize strength-based interventions, communication techniques, and practices to build resilience and support personal growth.
• Assess, teach, and track residents’ daily and independent living skills.
• Foster a therapeutic environment and encourage healthy social interactions.
• Contribute to a warm, nurturing, home-like setting by exemplifying responsibility and pride in household tasks.
• Actively participate in service planning, review, and goal-setting processes.
• Deliver rehabilitative services in alignment with service goals and objectives.
• Apply trauma-sensitive approaches in all interactions and practices.
• Accompany residents to appointments, home visits, sibling visits, and activities, providing supervision and transportation as needed.
• Support family involvement and reunification efforts, utilizing regular communication, strength-based methods, and creative strategies to enhance family relationships.
• Monitor and ensure adherence to medication regimens.
• Encourage and support children in taking responsibility for their own behavior and decision-making.
• Provide timely crisis intervention when necessary.
• Report incidents, occurrences, or any unexpected events to the supervisor immediately, ensuring appropriate documentation is completed.
• Complete all required documentation within established timeframes.
• Assist with household duties such as cleaning, laundry, shopping, meal planning, and preparation, while guiding and supervising children in developing these skills.
• Ensure that all residents have appropriate clothing for each season.

Qualifications:

· Associates or Bachelor’s degree in human services and interest in working with children and adolescents with behavioral and emotional challenges

· High school diploma considered with 2-3 years of direct experience working with children in the human services field

· A high degree of patience

· Strong interest and motivation in learning on how to effectively work with children who are experiencing social, emotional, mental health and/or behavioral challenges

· A high level of tolerance and patience

· A belief that children have the capacity to change regardless of their circumstances or behaviors

· Strong writing/record keeping skills

· Able to collaborate work within an interdisciplinary team

· Bilingual – English/Spanish, a plus

· A driver’s license and good driving record

· Good computer skills; knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and Microsoft Internet Explorer.

· Understanding and appreciation of the roles of race, religion, ethnicity, sexual preference, and individual values as they relate to servicing clients and families

· Willingness to work afternoon, evening and/or weekend shifts

· Willingness to work in-person in a residential setting.

SALARY:

$38,000 to $45,000 per year. Salary based on experience and qualifications. Excellent benefit package, ample vacation, holidays and sick days.
