What are the responsibilities and job description for the Family Support Worker position at Coalfield Family Services?
Location Requirement:
You must reside within 60 minutes of at least one of the following West Virginia counties to be eligible for this position:
Boone, Lincoln, Cabell, Wayne, Mingo, Logan, Randolph, Wetzel, Harrison, Upshur, Barbour, Lewis, Gilmer, Braxton, Kanawha, Wyomingand Putnam.
Work Schedule:
Clients are often at work or in school during the day, which means that services are frequently scheduled in the evenings and on weekends. Providers must have availability during these times to accommodate the needs of the families we serve. Some cases may also require daytime hours and there will be the rare MDT or court appearance that are during the day. Work is completed in the client’s home, community or the DoHS/CFS office.
Typical Family Support Worker Duties:
- Supervising visits between children in foster care and their families
- Providing in-home supervision and support
- Teaching parenting skills and basic adult life skills
- Transporting clients when necessary
- Documenting all services accurately and communicating clearly with agency staff
Employment Options:
W-2 Employee (Traditional Employment)
- Hourly Pay: $11–$13/hour (based on experience)
- Mileage Reimbursement: $0.25/mile (to and from client visits)
- Work Hours: Capped at 40 hours/week
- Case Assignment: You are expected to accept all assigned cases
- Schedule Flexibility: You help set your schedule, but it must align with client availability
- Pay Schedule: Paid bi-weekly, every other Friday (no payment delay)
- Benefits: No benefits are offered beyond Workers' Compensation and Unemployment at this time.
Note: Most staff qualify for free or discounted health insurance through the Healthcare Marketplace.
- Background Check Reimbursement: Reimbursed after 60 days of employment
1099 Contractor (Self-Employed)
- Hourly Pay: $16–$18/hour (varies by service type)
- Mileage Reimbursement: $0.45/mile (to and from client visits)
- Work Hours: No cap—you may work as much or as little as you choose
- Case Assignment: You can accept or decline cases (excessive refusals may lead to removal from the contractor pool)
- Schedule Flexibility: More control over your schedule, but must still meet client needs
- Pay Schedule: Paid bi-weekly, every other Monday
- Note: There is a 4-week delay in payment. Each paycheck reflects services submitted four weeks prior.
Important Administrative Notes:
- Paperwork Deadlines:
- Regular service documentation is due every other Monday by 12:00 PM (noon)
- Monthly reports are due by the 5th of each month
- Supervision Requirement:
Both W-2 employees and 1099 contractors are required to attend bi-weekly supervision, currently held on Sundays at 8:00 PM with a licensed social worker.

· All providers must pay for their own background checks upfront

Training:
- All training is completed online at your own pace
- 1099 contractors must complete contracts, training, and background checks before accepting any cases
- W-2 employees complete the same process but sign a different employment contract
Accountability and Compliance:
- 1099 Contractors:

- Failure to comply may result in contractual fines, probation, or contract termination, as outlined in the independent contractor agreement
- W-2 Employees:
- Expected to meet all performance standards and deadlines
- Failure to comply may result in termination of employment
General Requirements for All Applicants:
- Must pass a drug screening, criminal background check, and CPS abuse/neglect registry check
- Must have a high school diploma or GED
- Must have reliable transportation
- Must be capable of working independently and managing a professional schedule
Home Office and Communication
Our home office is located in Fort Gay, WV.
While most paperwork and communication are handled online, staff may occasionally be required to come to the office—though this is rare.
