Job Summary
Diesel Mechanic is a critical role in maintaining the functionality, safety, and reliability of our fleet of service vehicles and equipment used in oil and gas operations. These individuals will inspect, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain diesel-powered vehicles and equipment, ensuring all work meets industry and company standards. Advancement through mechanic levels is based on experience, certification, technical ability, and leadership skills.
Essential Functions & Primary Responsibilities:
  • Conduct diagnostics on diesel-powered vehicles and equipment using manual and computerized methods.
  • Repair or replace engines, transmissions, brakes, steering systems, lighting, electrical wiring, suspension, and hydraulics.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and scheduled servicing of vehicles.
  • Execute field repairs and provide remote troubleshooting support to field crews.
  • Respond promptly to emergency service calls.
  • Maintain shop and worksite cleanliness, order, and safety.
  • Accurately document repairs, diagnostics, and maintenance activities in system.
  • Adhere to inspection and compliance checklists for vehicle readiness.
  • Maintain parts inventory, submit requisitions, and report usage.
  • Collaborate with field teams and internal departments to prioritize repairs and ensure uptime.
  • Provide timely updates on repair timelines and equipment availability to internal stakeholders.
Internal Customer Service & Field Support Expectations:
  • Serve as a dependable technical resource for operations and field personnel.
  • Communicate equipment status, delays, and recommendations clearly and respectfully.
  • Prioritize repair requests based on field needs and operational urgency.
  • Work closely with dispatchers, supervisors, and drivers to coordinate equipment readiness.
  • Ensure minimal disruption to field operations through proactive communication and planning.
  • Support internal customers with professionalism, urgency, and a team-first attitude.

Skills, Licenses, and Education
Required Qualifications:
  • Degree/diploma in mechanical or automotive engineering (preferred)
  • ASE Diesel Certification (advantageous); Master Technician for senior levels
  • Air Brake and Air Conditioning Certifications
  • CDL or Chauffeur’s license preferred
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Proficiency in diesel engine diagnostics and repairs
  • Strong knowledge of hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems
  • Computer literacy for maintenance software
  • Possess own tools and maintain them in safe condition

Work Environment & Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to lift 75–150 pounds regularly
  • Must be able to stand, crouch, kneel, and bend for long periods
  • Work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Exposure to noise, grease, dust, and heavy equipment
  • Must be willing to work flexible hours, including callouts and overtime
Operational & Safety Requirements:
  • Follow all OSHA, DOT, and company safety policies.
  • Wear appropriate PPE in all designated areas.
  • Maintain awareness of environmental, fire, and chemical safety hazards.
  • Use lockout/tagout procedures and safety equipment correctly.
  • Ensure all repairs are completed to safety and manufacturer standards.
  • Participate in safety meetings and contribute to a culture of accountability.
Diesel Mechanic Levels:
Level 1 – Entry-Level Diesel Mechanic - Industry Experience: 0–3 years
  • Learning workflow, shop processes, and company systems
  • Assists with basic diagnostics and maintenance under supervision
  • Develops foundational skills and safety awareness
  • Required Certifications: 2
  • Key Skills:
    • 12V wiring diagnostics and repair
    • Air brake diagnostics
    • Fluid changes, PMs, minor repairs
    • Assist in inspections and documentation

Level 2 – Mid-Level Diesel Mechanic - Industry Experience: 4–6 years
  • Performs most general repairs with moderate independence
  • Begins complex diagnostics and repairs
  • Supports senior mechanics and helps train entry-level techs
  • Required Certifications: 5
  • Key Skills:
    • Troubleshoot and repair diesel and gas engines
    • Hydraulics/pneumatics, pumps, wiring
    • Read/interpret service manuals, diagrams
Level 3 – Senior Diesel Mechanic - Industry Experience: 7–9 years
  • Expert-level diagnostic and repair skills
  • Performs in-frame overhauls and rebuilds
  • Leads inspections, paperwork, and field calls
  • Mentors junior mechanics
  • Required Certifications: 7
  • Key Skills:
    • DEF system diagnostics
    • Equipment repair estimates and parts requisitions
    • Repair of semi-fleets and light-duty trucks
    • Communication with shop leadership
Level 4 – Master Diesel Mechanic - Industry Experience: 10 years
  • Fully autonomous, leads projects and teams
  • Certified ASE Master Technician
  • Specializes in high-level diagnostics and system repairs
  • Acts as field support lead and technical expert
  • Required Certifications: ASE Master Technician
  • Key Skills:
    • Master-level use of diagnostic software
    • Transmission, engine, and rear-end rebuilds
    • Full-scope project planning and repair documentation
    • Exceptional troubleshooting and leadership skills
