What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lead Technical Accountant position at CME Group?
The Lead of Accounting Research & Policy will play a critical role to perform key accounting research activities, formulates and prepares accounting position papers, provides training / guidance on new accounting standards and presents to others on technical accounting activities. This role will review routine and non-routine company transactions to identify the relevant accounting considerations for documentation and analysis. This role will also interact with and provide support to the financial reporting and corporate accounting teams in connection with quarter-end SEC reporting.
Principal Accountabilities:
- Prepare accounting analysis memorandums which document the procedures performed and results obtained as a result of accounting research under U.S. GAAP
- Provide accounting advice to business units / internal stakeholders as required
- Lead accounting analysis of projects associated with potential acquisitions, investments and other proposed transactions that require review by Executive Leadership and or Board of Directors
- Review financial statement footnote disclosures as well as MD&A for the quarterly SEC filings
- Oversee the Accounting Research Database as maintained on an internal SharePoint site
- Keep abreast of all current accounting standards initiatives, keep the organization informed of such activities as necessary, and draft comment letters on behalf of the company to regulatory bodies
- Prepare educational materials to summarize new accounting guidance and provide a framework for consistent application across the organization with respect to any new accounting standards
- Oversee activities and projects under U.S. GAAP as well as for various Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and regulatory filing requirements
- Develop a comprehensive accounting policy manual
- Establish and monitor corporate accounting policies and their compliance with relevant authoritative accounting guidance
- Partner/collaborate with key stakeholders to develop solutions for better financial and strategic outcomes that align with the company's overall strategic plan
- Manage external audit activities including technical accounting work performed
Skills & Software Requirements:
- CPA required
- Must be an accomplished business writer with experience crafting Executive Summaries and memo-writing
- Proficiency in accounting research and technical accounting policy under U.S. GAAP, IFRS is a plus
- Expertise in Microsoft Office required; Sharepoint, Wdesk, and Workday is a plus
- Financial Services experience
- Familiarity with google sheets, google docs, and google slides is a plus
