Job Summary:
CMC Phoenix is seeking a Lifeguard Behavioral Health Technician (BHT) to join the Nursing Department on a PRN, day‑shift basis. The Lifeguard BHT will support licensed staff in providing safe and therapeutic patient care, including supervising aquatic activities, monitoring patient and guest safety, and enforcing all pool and facility rules. This position will also assist with patient observation and engagement, help maintain a clean and hazard‑free environment, and document observations as directed, all in adherence to hospital policies, procedures, and regulatory standards.
Job Qualifications:
High school diploma or G.E.D. required
Minimum one (1) year of experience in an acute psychiatric inpatient setting preferred
Current BLS for Healthcare Providers card required
Current Lifeguard Certification valid in the State of Arizona is required
Current Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card (State of Arizona) required
CPI (Crisis Prevention Intervention) certification required within 30 days of hire
Ability to observe and document patient behavior accurately and objectively
Ability to work effectively in a fast‑paced behavioral health environment and function as part of a multidisciplinary team
Job‑Specific Duties:
Supervise all aquatic activities involving patients and visitors to ensure a safe and therapeutic environment
Maintain constant surveillance of the pool and surrounding areas; identify and respond quickly to signs of distress or unsafe behavior
Enforce all pool, safety, and facility rules in a calm, consistent, and therapeutic manner
Perform water rescues, first aid, and initiate CPR/BLS in accordance with training and hospital policy when needed
Conduct pre‑use safety checks of the pool, deck, and related equipment; promptly report and/or correct hazards
Monitor patients’ mental and emotional status during aquatic activities and communicate concerns to nursing or clinical staff
Support de‑escalation and crisis‑intervention efforts in and around the pool area in accordance with CPI training
Document patient participation, observations, safety checks, and any incidents related to aquatic activities per hospital policy

Placement in the pay range is based on multiple factors, including but not limited to relevant years of experience and qualifications. In addition to base pay, there may be additional compensation available for CMC Phoenix roles, including but not limited to shift differential and other special pay practices. The posted compensation for the position is a reasonable estimate that extends from the lowest to the highest pay that CMC Phoenix in good faith believes it might pay for this particular job, based on the circumstances at the time of posting.
