Location: Claremont, CA Job Posting Title: Assistant Dean of Students for Mentorship Programs and Identity Development Job Details and Requirement: COMPENSATION RANGE: $74,000 - $76,000 BASIC FUNCTION Reporting to the Associate Dean of Students for Diversity & Inclusion and Director of the CARE Center, the Assistant Dean will: Support and serve as resource expert for underrepresented populations of students, with an emphasis on work with Asian Pacific Islander Desi American (APIDA) student community through programs, coaching and advising, assisting with organizational management, and serving as the primary Dean of Students office liaison. Develop models and frameworks for student mentorship experiences including providing expertise, training, and assistance to the existing (e.g. Asian Pacific American Mentors, 1Gen (First-Generation Mentors) and growing population of student mentorship organizations, as well as all students desiring to acquire coaching and mentoring skills. Assist with Claremont McKenna College’s diversity, equity, inclusion and anti-racism work including supporting initiatives and programs such as The Open Academy, The Presidential Initiative on Anti-Racism and the Black Experience in America, and the CARE Center. Work collaboratively with other Dean of Students professionals, Title IX & Civil Rights, CMS Athletics, Faculty and Research Institutes, and peer professionals across the other Claremont Colleges. DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Design and deliver training programs for students in leadership roles in peer mentorship organizations, and other students interested in developing mentorship/coaching skills. Training programs/topics include recruitment and selection of peer mentors, training peer mentors, basic and advanced mentorship skills, mentorship models, organizational management for mentorship groups. Provide ongoing coaching and support for student leaders of peer mentorship organizations Serve as primary staff resource for student mentorship organizations and assist them with ongoing program effectiveness. Assist students with planning and implementing programs and events such as mentor training/retreat and mentor/mentee retreats; developing curricula, agendas, attending and facilitating, assisting with logistics as needed. Serve as a primary resource and support person for the Asian Pacific Islander Desi- American (APIDA) student community. Assess needs and desired outcomes relating to well-being and student success in collaboration with APIDA identifying students and College staff / faculty Raise awareness among campus stakeholders about the unique aspects of APIDA identity as related to the college student experience. Assist students with the development of short and long-term goals for student organizations that support APIDA students. Liaise with campus administrators from various offices and departments at CMC and the Claremont Colleges consortium to support the success of APIDA students. Partner programmatically with Pomona College’s Asian American Resource Center (AARC) and Pitzer College’s Center for Asian Pacific American Students (CAPAS) and Intercollegiate Department of Asian American Studies at The Claremont Colleges (IDAAS). Serve on CMC and consortium committees including, but not limited to: CMC Staff Diversity Committee, 7C Asian American Advisory Board, and 7C Inclusive Excellence Committee. Develop relationships and collaborate with critical partners at CMC and across the Claremont Colleges including but not limited to: Soll Center, Admissions and Financial Aid, Dean of Faculty, The Office of Black Student Affairs (OBSA), Chicano Latino Student Affairs (CLSA), Monsour Counseling and Psychological Services, McAlister Center for Religious Activities, the Queer Resource Center (QRC), EmPOWER Center, and other resource groups; Represent the specific interests of Claremont McKenna College students and supplement consortium programs with CMC-specific programs. Assist with residential education program development related to anti-racism, intersectionality, intergroup dialogue skills, and effective dialogue related to viewpoint diversity. Work closely with the Associate Dean for Diversity and Inclusion and Director of CARE Center to support the major Claremont College initiatives: The Open Academy, and The Presidential Initiative on Anti-Racism and the Black Experience in America. Guide and advise students in designing programs that create a sense of belonging and offer opportunities for personal growth and identity development. Partner with the AVP for Dialogue and Diversity and the Associate Dean of Students for Diversity and Inclusion and Director of CARE Center in providing and implementing leadership development trainings and programs for cultural affinity groups and Associate Students of Claremont McKenna College (ASCMC) diversity and inclusion committee. Provide general support, advocacy, and referrals for individual students to campus resources. Work collaboratively with colleagues across the Dean of Student Office to meet and support the diverse needs of the student body. Collaborate with Associate Dean of Students for Diversity and Inclusion and Director of CARE Center to provide programmatic engagement and student development data for assessment and institutional reporting. Stay abreast of national trends, best practices, and literature related to diversity, equity, inclusion, constructive dialogue, identity development, and student success. Assist with Dean of Students Office special projects on and as needed basis. QUALIFICATION STANDARDS: Education: Master’s degree in Student Affairs/Higher Education, Counseling, Social Work, Psychology or related social/behavioral science field, or related field required. Experience: Minimum of 3- 5 years of experience, preferably working in a college environment. Previous experience and expertise in issues and history related to APIDA identifying students, student development work, diversity and equity, mentorship and coaching, campus programming, student organization advising preferred. A commitment to promoting a proactive and interactive approach to overall student success in the college setting. Familiarity with social media platforms and web content development.
