Overview
The Laboratory Accessioner plays a crucial role in the efficient operation of a clinical or research laboratory. Willing to work late nights and weekends. This position involves the accurate and timely processing of specimens, ensuring that all samples are properly labeled, recorded, and prepared for analysis. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in laboratory management and techniques, with a keen attention to detail and adherence to safety protocols.
Duties
- Receive and log incoming specimens, ensuring accurate documentation and labeling.
- Process specimens for testing, including centrifugation and preparation for analysis.
- Maintain an organized laboratory environment, adhering to aseptic techniques and safety regulations.
- Collaborate with laboratory staff to ensure efficient workflow and communication regarding specimen status.
- Assist in specimen collection and processing as needed, including venipuncture and other collection techniques.
- Perform routine maintenance on laboratory equipment and troubleshoot any issues that arise.
- Stay updated on laboratory procedures, medical terminology, and relevant regulations to ensure compliance.
Skills
- Strong understanding of laboratory management principles and practices.
- Proficient in various laboratory techniques including phlebotomy, specimen collection/processing, and aseptic technique.
- Clinical or research laboratory experience is highly desirable, with familiarity in cardiac catheterization and spinal tap procedures being a plus.
- Knowledge of physiology, anatomy, and medical terminology to accurately process specimens.
- Experience working in a hospital setting or with pediatric patients is beneficial.
- Familiarity with veterinary terminology may be advantageous for certain laboratory environments.
- Basic life support certification is preferred to ensure readiness for any emergencies that may arise during specimen handling or processing. This role is essential for maintaining the integrity of laboratory operations while providing support to healthcare professionals in delivering accurate patient care.
