Position Summary:
Under the supervision of the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office Uniformed Services Lieutenant, the Administrative Assistant provides a variety of clerical and support services. The Administrative Assistant is responsible for assisting in daily operations of the Clinton County Animal Shelter. Oversee the attendance and performance of volunteers or trustees as applicable.
Essential Job Functions:
The Administrative Assistant may be called upon to do any or all the following essential functions. - Follow all state and local laws regarding personally owned animals.
- Greet and register visitors to the animal shelter. Direct them to appropriate resources as needed.
- Demonstrate flexible and efficient time management and ability to prioritize workload.
- Provides information to the public on state laws and responds to questions concerning animal control issues.
- Write and speak effectively regarding state laws and local ordinances regarding animal control concerns.
- Able to maintain accurate records of any animals brought to the shelter.
- Assist in the intake of animals.
- Ensure return to owner animals are documented in the shelter database. Provide owners with information and/education if applicable.
- Ensure animal information is entered correctly into shelter database.
- Communicate with Animal Control regarding potential health issues of incoming animals.
- Maintain documentation in shelter database for animal histories on animals including euthanasia.
- Assist with proper identification of all animals in the building.
- Respond to phone calls, voicemails, and e-mails in a timely manner.
- Perform Daily Shelter Operations checklist.
- Complete additional duties as assigned.
- Assist as needed in other areas of the shelter.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Minimum Qualifications:

Requirements include the following:
High school diploma or equivalent and a minimum of one year of more responsible experience in the animal welfare industry. The Sheriff’s Office, at its discretion, may consider an alternative combination of formal education and work experience. The Administrative Assistant must:
· Maintain a valid Michigan Vehicle Operator’s License
· Must be able to obtain LEIN certification
· CPR and First Aid Certification
· Knowledge of the principles and practices of shelter procedure
· Knowledge and skill in maintaining and maintaining detailed and accurate records in both electronic and non-electronic formats and providing customer service.
· Skill in effectively communicating ideas and concepts orally and in writing.
· Ability to establish effective working relationships and use good judgment, initiative and resourcefulness when dealing with county employees, contractors to the county, representatives of other governmental units, professional contacts, elected officials, and the public.
· Ability to assess situations, solve problems, work effectively under stress, within deadlines, and in emergency situations.
· Skill in the use of office equipment and technology, including Microsoft Suite applications, and database entry and maintenance.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
Work is performed at an animal shelter in shared office space. There is potential exposure to zoonotic diseases, dangerous and fractious animals, high noise levels, hazardous chemicals, anesthetics, and sharp objects. Occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds, potential for standing 8 hours a day, animal handling and restraint in a veterinary setting are all required. There is possible exposure of infectious diseases to personal animals. Must be able to handle all sizes and activity levels of animals.
Candidate must successfully complete a physical fitness and pre-employment exam, drug screen, and background check.
