Description:
Promote a safe and orderly environment by planning and implementing programs designed to reduce school violence, including bullying prevention programs, school safety drills, and family engagement and education activities designed to teach awareness and prevention about school Violence. A School Liaison Officer (SLO) will assist the school in maintaining a safe environment for students, staff, and visitors. SLO focuses primarily on a proactive effort to make schools and communities safer, and on promoting responsible citizenship and positive character traits among students in grades K-12. The SLO interacts positively with students to gain confidence and trust. The SLO actively supports the school's policy to discipline student behavior that threatens the health or safety of others. School administrators work with the SLO to dissolve and correct disagreements and/or harassment issues between students before they become more serious. SLO will assist in teaching curriculum and will receive training from content experts in student and juvenile psychology, classroom management, bullying and harassment, and school safety issues. The SLO will, when necessary, provide security services for the school property, including, but not limited to, responding to incidents involving violence or threats of violence.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Plan and promote activities to reduce school violence.
- Plan and implement bullying prevention programs at district and school family and school engagement events.
- Coordinates program-related staff development for family and staff as indicated.
- Makes classroom on program-related topics in coordination with instructional staff and school principals.
- Assists district and school administrative staff with safety concerns.
- Attends school security officer meetings with the Michigan State Police, Grants and Community Services Division.Teaching, Educating, and Mentoring (T.E.A.M.)
- Makes recommendations for school administration and staff utilizing needs assessment data, threat assessment data, and observation.
- Completes weekly and monthly accountability reports (such as for grants).
- Facilitates re-entry into school for students who have been suspended; collaborating with students, families, instructional staff, and school administrators.
- Provide support and resources for students and families of students re-entering school from detention facilities.
- Work collaboratively with the county attendance officer and homeless liaison to ensure student attendance and facilitate academic success.
- Collaborate with schools, parent-teacher groups, civic organizations, law enforcement, and other youth and community organizations to provide information and awareness on school safety.
- Serve as team player and role model for other employees in the organization, demonstrating a commitment to organizational success and continuous improvement processes.
- Provide for the general safety and security of District students, staff, and visitors.
- Respond to acts of violence and/or threats of violence as necessary, in coordination with law enforcement and other first responders.
- Assist the Superintendent and other District administrators in establishing an incident command site, communications, etc. as necessary in the event of an incident necessitating such.
- Plan and provide school safety training exercises for District employees, students, and visitors, including ensuring that all statutorily required drills and training are completed as required.
- SLO is required to carry a firearm while performing the SLO services to the District.
