Job Summary 

As a Routesetter with Movement, you’ll be joining a collaborative, innovative, and passionate team of setters to develop high-quality, safe, and engaging climbs for our community. This opportunity is for a creative and hard-working individual with significant setting experience (3 years), either through Movement’s Routesetting Apprenticeship Program or other setting environment. Reporting to the Assistant Director of Setting or Head Routesetter of your home gym, you’ll be responsible for managing the workflow of your day in an efficient and productive manner. 

Routesetter: Very experienced Routesetter. Excel in core routesetting skills, demonstrating advanced risk assessment, delivering high-quality climbs, acting as the example for others to look up to, and helping the Head Routesetter to actively mentor the team. 

What you’ll be doing: 

  • Prepare setting area (boundaries, fixed lines, etc.)
  • Strip wall sections to prepare for new routes/problems
  • Set high quality skeletons (first draft of a climb) on all types of terrain
  • Maintain tidy setting area throughout the day, and help clean the area at the end of the day
  • Adhere to and promote workplace safety expectations (Work at Height standards, etc.) 
  • Forerunning  (i.e. climbing)
    • Climb product to help the routesetting team grade the routes/problems that are set each day
    • Be open to feedback and willing to perform as directed
    • Your climbing will help the setting team ensure all routes and problems are safe, can be executed in a manner that is appropriate for the assigned grade, and that are accessible to a wide range of customers
    • Leading small forerunning groups as assigned by the Head Setter or ADS
  • Assisting in the creation of 
    • Color layout 
    • Grade distribution and assignments 
    • Activations (training camps, comps, installations, etc.)
  • Additional tasks and projects may be assigned, including but not limited to: assist anchor/safety inspections, setting of boards and training equipment, setting for and participation in activations, customer engagement, or attendance of Routesetting department meetings
What success looks like: 

  • You’re reliably setting high quality skeletons, forerunning, and grading routes/problems effectively
  • You’re able to operate independently
  • You’ve demonstrated efficiency and creativity, with an openness to constructive feedback from fellow team members and the Movement community
  • You can provide supportive and constructive feedback on other’s routesetting
  • You understand Movement’s quality of product and aesthetic standards
  • You consistently meet production quota for routes and boulders on all terrain types
  • You are the go-to individual for your ADS or Head Setter
  • You are developing the skills required to become a successful routesetting leader

What you’ll bring with you

Gotta have: 

  • Solid setting experience (3 years)
  • Demonstrated efficiency and reliability as a part of a setting team
  • Strong understanding of workplace safety expectations (Work at Height standards, etc.)
  • Passion for the craft of routesetting
  • The ability to test and evaluate the accessibility, quality, and difficulty of climbs across a wide variety of styles
  • The ability to thrive in a team-oriented and collaborative environment
  • Strong work ethic, attention to detail, and the ability to manage your own workflow while being a resource to others
  • Empathetic and effective communication skills – you understand how to consider diverse communication styles to build and maintain relationships
  • The ability to always follow and promote safe practices 

Bonus points for: 

  • Lead climbing proficiency 
  • Ability to climb at least 5.12 and/or V6

Additional Details

  • This role is based in Belmont – applicants will be assigned this primary location but may have opportunities to support other locations as agreed upon
  • This is a full-time position
  • Starting pay at $25 – $35/hour, flexibility available based on experience
  • Benefits include free membership, in-gym discounts, guest visits, potential 401(k) eligibility, paid time off, health benefits
  • Internal candidates who apply should be in excellent standing with their current director/management team
  • New hires will complete a screening process
  • Scheduled shift times may vary from week to week or month to month
